SFA is Looking for Volunteers

There is a spirit of volunteerism in the town of Chelmsford that makes it a special place to live. That prompted one member of the Sewer Fairness Alliance to form a team to help the town and their neighbors with grinder pumps when the power goes out. For those that are unaware, no power equals no flushing, no washing – nothing can happen that introduces water into the system as the output will need to either go into the home or onto the yard.

The town will pump down M-F 8am-3pm if personnel are available, but this leaves weekends and most of the day uncovered. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help out with this effort. Those with a pickup truck and/or a generator are especially needed but even if you do not have these you may still be able to help as one member of a 2 person crew. The SFA will be looking for one or more generators as a donation from Sears, Home Depot or Lowes.

The pump down process will probably take about 15 minutes to perform. This could take place with several feet of snow on the ground or with heavy rain and may involve moving the generator so volunteers must be able-bodied and comfortable in adverse weather.

We will work on coordinating with the sewer department during business hours, and the police department at other times. We will have a call tree for after 3:00 p.m., weekends and holidays to make sure that homes are serviced as needed.

Thank you for wanting to help your neighbors. Please contact Dave Foley at davidfoleyfam@comcast.net, 978-256-6813 to learn more.
