More than 450 participants and 60 volunteers helped to raise over $50,000 for the Lung Cancer partnership.
The second annual Free to Breathe 5k raised brought families and friends together yesterday in an event with more than 450 participants. The event raised more than $50,000 for the National Lung Cancer Partnership, which funds grants to find a cure for lung cancer. Joseph Almasian of Westford and his family rallied together yesterday at the suggestion of his 10-year-old daughter Meline. Almasians' father - "Grandpa Joe" - died of lung cancer in June. Over the summer, Meline suggested doing a walk to raise money for the cause. "So from her inspiration, my wife found Free to Breathe right in our backyard," he said. "And we rallied everyone around Grandpa Joe and created Grandmpa Joe's Musical Notes." His father had been an avid saxophone …

Join Patch in helping find a cure for lung cancer.
The Free to Breathe 5k run/walk is Sunday at the Harrington School/Chelmsford High School, and you can still register on the day of the event to walk and make a difference in the fight against lung cancer. All proceeds of the fun run/walk benefit the National Lung Cancer Partnership. "Research is the biggest bulk of what they do but also awareness and patient education programs, so helping find a clinical trial (for patients), finding best care in your area, oncologists, paper materials and patient booklets, doing health fairs, things like that," said Suzanne Dahlberg, who is organizing the event. Free to Breathe has more than 40 events nationwide, Dahlberg said, and if you can't make the Chelmsford walk, participants can register at …

Local family hopes to raise money in second annual Free to Breathe 5k.
The location of the second-annual Free to Breathe 5k is not just a convenience for Chelmsford resident Sue D’Amore - it is a comforting coincidence. “I was so excited to find out the event was in Chelmsford,” she said. “It was like a message for me. I believe this was a sign sent to get involved.” Both the location and purpose of the event are very close to D’Amore, who lost her ex-husband Tony to lung cancer in November 2010. According to a written statement by D’Amore, Tony was diagnosed with stafe four lung cancer in February 2010. “He was a sensitive, compassionate, and extremely patient man,” she said. One of the fondest memories D’Amore has of her husband is his passion for 1971 Z28 Camaro. “Our team name in the 5k is Z28s …

Westford resident Becky Jacobson helps plan the annual Free to Breathe 5k.
When Rebecca “Becky” Jacobson of Westford found out her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer just a few months ago, she immediately turned the situation into a positive one. “As soon as my mother was diagnosed, I started doing some research online about it and found about Free to Breathe,” she said. “I wanted to join so I could help change lung cancer statistics.” One way the Merrimack Valley native is changing the future of lung cancer is by helping organize the Second Annual Free to Breathe 5K to be held in Chelmsford on Sep. 25. The event is one of many put on by the Free the Breathe organization this year in hopes of raising money for future cures for lung cancer. All proceeds from the event benefit the National Lung Cancer …

Sign up for the Free to Breathe 5k fun run/walk and support a cure for lung cancer.
Suzanne Dahlberg knows lung cancer doesn't have to be a death sentence. Residents are invited to support lung cancer awareness and hope for a cure at the Free to Breathe 5k on Sept. 25. Money raised from the event benefits the National Lung Cancer Partnership. Dahlberg is organizing the event. "This is a community event to raise hope and awareness for lung cancer, a celebration of survivorship and memberance of those we've lost," she said. "It's meant to be an uplifting experience. I think when people think of lung cancer, they think gloom and doom, but that's not what we’re about." Money raised at the event goes toward the lung cancer partnership's research grant program, to help find a cure. Dahlberg has been working hard to "do it …
