Harrington Kids Raise Money For Woodcrest Victims

The initiative follows in the wake of efforts to help Fukushima victims last year.

Last year, kids from the Harrington School helped out survivors of the Fukushima disaster in Japan. This year, their thoughts are a little closer to home. Recently Harrington School principal Michael Lacava presented a $500 check to help survivors of the Woodcrest Fire earlier this year, courtesy of spare change donated by Harrington students themselves. For Lacava, the donation was not just an opportunity to do good, but also a moment to teach his students that they can make an impact as well. “We wanted to do something for the community,” said Lacava. “It all goes back to what we try to tell the kids about giving back.”  The check was accepted by the successor to the Woodcrest Relief Group, now known as “Chelmsford Cares”, which hopes to…

Investigators Determine Cause of Woodcrest Fire

State and local officials say the blaze was accidental.

On Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:10 p.m., the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services announced in a joint investigation by local and state fire and police officials that the most likely cause of the recent Woodcrest fire was an extension cord underneath a fold-out couch. Investigators also indicate the fire was likely accidental. The fire took the lives of Susan Astle, 67, and Paul Deslauriers, 77, who lived in the apartment. A 7-year old boy was injured in the fire and is being treated in a Boston hospital. Twenty-one apartments were destroyed by the fire and 31 people were displaced by the fire. “Sadly, this fire took two lives and forever altered so many others," said Chelmsford Fire Department chief Michael Curran.
