An exclusion on heavy trucks on Golden Cove Road is unlikely thanks to advice given to the Chelmsford Board of Selectmen received from the Northern Middlesex Council of Governments. The board’s Vice Chairman Matthew Hanson updated the town on the status of the potential exclusion after discussing its feasibility with NMCOG. On Monday night, the Chelmsford Board of Selectmen opted to table a discussion on potentially submitting a request to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to have heavy trucks banned from Golden Cove Road. Town Engineer Steve Jahnle presented information from a third party traffic study that took place in late December which found that about 3 percent of total vehicles on Golden Cove were over 2.5 tons. Massachusetts typically grants truck exclusions to streets that see between 5-8 percent of its usage come from heavy trucks. These findings were consistent with those of the Chelmsford Police Department, whose study was discussed at last month’s meeting. The Chelmsford Board of Selectmen approved three “No Left Turn” signs to be posted on Golden Cove Road during its meeting last night. The signs will limit left turns onto New Fletcher Street, New Spaulding Street, and Dawn Drive. The turn limitations will be in effect every Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and will be effective immediately. “I’ve witnessed and almost been hit by many cars when walking my dog,” Debbie Malone, a New Fletcher Street resident, explained to the board prior to their unanimous vote.
