The Town Wants Your Take on What's Next For The Remnants Of The Town Common Beech Tree

What should be done with the remnants of this Chelmsford landmark? The town wants your opinion, and so do we.

Back in November, we asked you what should be done with the iconic beech tree on the Common, and as we all know, it was cut down a few days later. Today, we want to ask you what should be done with the stump and remaining wood from the tree, because the town is taking stock and will come to a decision soon. You can send in your feedback to the town on what should be done on the TREE Committee page on the town website, or by bringing in the attached form to Room LL05 of Town Hall. Submissions are due by Feb. 10 On Feb. 28, the TREE Committee will take a look at all the suggestions and review them in a public input session at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

Ed we cuttings last year and have 20 that have taken (no cost to the town). I am sure one will go back to the common when they are of the right size. It will be a few years till they reach a size one can be planted there. I think it would be better for the "same tree" to return to the common instead of a new one. The others residents can decide where to plant them (we also have a few years on …   more ›

Chelmsford Residents Hold Impromptu Candlelight Vigil for Connecticut Shooting Victims

Feeling the need to do something following Friday's tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut, Chelmsford's Ryan Donaher and Sheena Miller helped rally dozens of local residents in a matter of hours on Saturday night.

Chelmsford residents Ryan Donaher and Sheena Miller felt the need to do something after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, so they spontaneously gathered then on the Town Common to help give their neighbors a place to grieve. On Saturday night, they did it again. In a matter of hours, the two helped bring together around 50 to 70 local residents on the Common as part of a candlelight vigil for the victims of Newtown, Connecticut. The pair both graduated from Chelmsford High School in 2006, but both retain ties to the area and were pleased to help offer a focal point for those looking to show their sympathy for those involved in Friday's tragedy. "I think this showed the real holiday spirit," said Miller. "We wanted to do what we could to help …

TELL US: What Should Be Done About the Beech Tree on the Common?

A decision will be made on Monday, but in the meantime, what are your thoughts?

Hurricane Sandy didn't do any favors to the old tree on the Common, but it wasn't the beginning of this Chelmsford icon's deterioration by any means. A decision will be made on Monday night, but in the meantime, what do you think should be done with the tree?

Andrew G's ideas about using the wood from the tree are great! Now who will take charge of the wood and put forth Andrew's ideas! The purple beech tree was more than just a tree, it was the town's tree, it grew along with the history of the town of Chelmsford.   more ›
