Holiday Return Etiquette

What to do when the present just doesn't make the grade.

The holiday season, whether you celebrate Hannukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or anything else, is a time of giving, and this often means the exchanging of gifts. Gift receiving can be an exciting aspect of the holidays. Some people choose to make a wish list, some don't. Whether you do or not, traditionally presents are a surprise. The surprise can be a double-edged sword. Sometimes, you rip off the wrapping paper and you see the high-tech gadget you'd had your eye on, or a coveted item in the latest craze of the season. Other times, the package holds a frumpy sweater or socks. What do you do in these latter instances, when the gift is the last thing you had hoped for? Do you grin, and pull on the candy-apple-red sweater as your aunt smiles …
