Gov. Deval Patrick Appoints New Middlesex County District Attorney

Michael Pelgro has been serving as acting district attorney in Middlesex County.

Governor Deval Patrick announced this week he has appointed Marian T. Ryan as Middlesex County District Attorney (DA), according to a press release issued by Patrick's office.  Ryan, who currently serves as the Middlesex DA's general counsel, will assume the responsibilities for the Middlesex County DA's Office as DA Gerald Leone recently stepped down from his post to join a private law firm.  A 30-year veteran of the Middlesex County DA's office, Ryan has served as general counsel and chief of the office's elder and disabled unit, the press release said. Pelgro Named Acting Middlesex DA

Gov. Patrick plans to name Gerry Leone's permanent successor next week.

Gov. Deval Patrick has named First Assistant District Attorney Michael Pelgro as the acting Middlesex County District Attorney to replace Gerry Leone.  Patrick, who made the announcement in a statement on Friday, April 12, plans to announce a permanent appointment to fill out Leone's term next week, according to the Lowell Sun. Voters will elect a new DA in the biennial election in 2014.  In January, Leone announced he would not seek a third term. In March, Leone announced he would join a private law firm.  Pelgro, in a statement from Patrick's office, said he is honored to take the job. “I am very grateful that the Governor has exhibited the confidence in me, to appoint me to such an important position of public trust,” he said. “I am …

Middlesex County Second Healthiest in Mass., Says Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Among Massachusetts' 14 counties, only Dukes County was healthier according to the study.

  Is Middlesex County the healthiest place in Massachusetts to live? If not, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation says it's right up there. In a recent study done by the Foundation called "County Health Rankings and Roadmaps," Middlesex ended up second in the state, trailing only Dukes County overall. Even there, Middlesex County exceeded Dukes in some areas such as patient to doctor and patient to dentist ratios. In measures ranging from adult obesity and insurance coverage to premature death and teen birth rates, Middlesex County was at or exceeding the state average. Middlesex Sheriff Employee Charged With Fraud

A Malden resident is facing allegations she inappropriately used sick time to pursue a career in real estate.

A Middlesex County Sheriff's Office employee is facing criminal fraud charges for allegedly working another job while she remained on medical leave from the sheriff's office. Joyce Drinkwater, 67, of Malden was charged on Nov. 19 with knowingly presenting a fraudulent claim to a public employer for a benefit, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office. Drinkwater allegedly collected her full salary as she stayed on medical leave from the sheriff's office. Drinkwater, who worked in the sheriff's payroll office, took medical leave in June and when that ended she allegedly used her unused sick time remain out on leave, according to the DA's office. She allegedly certified to the sheriff's office that she was unable to work …
