School Committee Hosts Public Input Meeting

Parents, teachers, and students voice concern and appreciation for the town's public school system.

The School Committee last night held a community input session and many parents voiced concerns over bullying, school vacations, and bussing among other topics. "We wanted to have an informal public input session," said School Committee Chairwoman Janet Askenburg,  "so that you can tell us what's working and what you'd like to see done differently next year." Three dozen parents, teachers, and students took advantage of the opportunity by engaging in lively discussions, including one on bussing procedures and fees. Currently, parents are charged $200 per child up to $500 per family for bussing use. The vehicles used to be state-funded, but parents were required to pay as state money dried up. Director of Curriculum Praises MCAS Success

Hussey pleased with results.

Chelmsford's student performance on last year's MCAS test, with results published Tuesday, became a topic of discussion during press questioning at that night's School Committee hearing. Donna Hussey, director of curriculum and instruction for Chelmsford Public Schools, gave more information about the success of students at Harrington, which was named to a state Department of Education "Commendation Schools" list, and Chelmsford High. The state, Hussey said, has in recent years been using a state percentile ranking system that compares students and schools by MCAS scores, with schools being compared in cohort groups with those who performed similar to them in previous years.
