After collecting 2,084 votes in Tuesday’s election, Matt Hanson was elected chairman of the Chelmsford Board of Selectmen during its brief meeting on Wednesday evening. “We did it! Thank you to everyone who supported my re-election campaign! I am looking forward to representing you for another three years,” Hanson said via his Twitter account. According to Hanson’s website, his goals in his next term include securing improvements to Vinal Square and Chelmsford Center, overseeing of a new fire station and DPW facility, and pursuing tax relief, recreational space and historic preservation opportunities. Outgoing School Committee Chair is a Candidate in Next Tuesday's Board of Selectmen's Race
At her final School Committee Meeting this past Tuesday, Chairman and current Candidate for Chelmsford Board of Selectmen, Janet Askenburg was presented with a plaque honoring her three years of service on the Committee. Chelmsford Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Frank Tiano presented Askenburg with the plaque and gave a short speech thanking Askenburg for her service and leadership as both Secretary and Chairman. “We know that anyone who volunteers for this Committee, or for Selectmen, or any of the other town boards, really have taken time out of their personal lives to do a service for the town. The current chairwoman of the School Committee took out papers on Monday, bringing the field up to five.
On Monday morning, School Committee chairwoman Janet Askenburg took out nomination papers to run for the Board of Selectmen, bringing the number of candidates back up to five. The race had five candidates after Pat Maloney entered the race, but had dropped to four after newcomer Louis Marino said he would not return his nomination papers. "I am proud to announce my candidacy for the Chelmsford Board of Selectmen," said Askenburg in a released statement.. "I am running for one of the two Selectmen seats because I want to offer my experience as a business leader, community volunteer, and advocate for fiscal responsibility to help maintain and improve the quality of life for all Chelmsford residents." The School Committee met last night to discuss contract negotiations between food service personnel and vote for a new Director of Student Services.
Chelmsford High Director of Student Services Carol Fredette is retiring on June 30 and Chelmsford school officials appointed Brad Brooks as a replacement last night. The committee has been searching for a replacement since January 2011. The Chelmsford Public School Committee heard from Superintendent of schools Frank Tiano about the search and the district's top candidate. The Director of Student Services is a central administration position within the school department and is a director of special education, an ELL coordinator, as well as being in charge of nurses, guidance counselors, and school psychologists. The School Committee met on Tuesday to discuss next year's school budget, which will increase $1.43 million over this year's budget, or about 3 percent. Chelmsford Public School business manager Kathy McWilliams summarized the budget for the committee. “We’re thrilled, because some towns don’t get any (monetary) addition, ... they cut it,” she said. “We’re pleased, we’re thankful the town of Chelmsford helps us. But to do better, that’s the forecast, and we need more.” Despite the increase, McWilliams said the fiscal 2013 budget was tight, and that the majority of the budget bump comes from salary increases. “It pretty much is a needs-based budget,” said McWilliams, “There really isn’t a lot extra for operating costs.” The town contributes…

The Chelmsford Public School Committee voted last night to allow families to decide to opt of taking the bi-annual Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The survey is passed out to Chelmsford High School students by the health department. The anonymous survey asks questions regarding the habits of teens, including health and wellness, sexuality, drug and tobacco use, diet, physical activity, and a variety of other factors. The committee's vote changes the current opt-in policy, where a student must have a permission form signed by parents before they can participate in the survey. Matt or Janet would have been the best choice because they have the least tenure with the other town officials. Matt, don't be afraid to question (strongly) the ideas of other town officials. Paul Cohen doesn't deserve the glowing reviews you have given him in the past, and I think you know that.
