Golden Cove Truck Exclusion Unlikely

The town will seek alternate traffic solutions with help from the Northern Middlesex Council of Governments.

An exclusion on heavy trucks on Golden Cove Road is unlikely thanks to advice given to the Chelmsford Board of Selectmen received from the Northern Middlesex Council of Governments. The board’s Vice Chairman Matthew Hanson updated the town on the status of the potential exclusion after discussing its feasibility with NMCOG. The potential truck exclusion gained no traction with NMCOG. “The state would most likely only grant that [truck exclusion] in extremely serious situations where there were a number of serious truck incidents recorded on that road,” Hanson explained. “We discussed this for probably about an hour with them; they shared some of the same concerns as the whole board has expressed already. “They thought that they might be …

How many? Does it really matter? Is there a quota? If its none, we want to keep it that way. If it's 1, that's 1 too many. Personally, I have almost hit several crossing the bike trail. Luckily, I know it's there and slow way down when approaching; unlike the truckers cutting through that "try to catch air" -- an actual quote from a long term resident -- when going over the hill at the corner of …   more ›

Board of Selectmen Tables Golden Cove Exclusion Discussion

Town Engineer Steve Jahnle shared new information from a third party traffic study done on Golden Cove Road.

On Monday night, the Chelmsford Board of Selectmen opted to table a discussion on potentially submitting a request to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to have heavy trucks banned from Golden Cove Road. Town Engineer Steve Jahnle presented information from a third party traffic study that took place in late December which found that about 3 percent of total vehicles on Golden Cove were over 2.5 tons. Massachusetts typically grants truck exclusions to streets that see between 5-8 percent of its usage come from heavy trucks. These findings were consistent with those of the Chelmsford Police Department, whose study was discussed at last month’s meeting. Jahnle went on to explain that a three year analysis from the Chelmsford …

"No Left Turn" Signs Approved for Golden Cove Road

New Fletcher Street, New Spaulding Street, and Dawn Drive will be a little safer on weekday mornings; the Golden Cove truck exclusion debate rages on.

The Chelmsford Board of Selectmen approved three “No Left Turn” signs to be posted on Golden Cove Road during its meeting last night. The signs will limit left turns onto New Fletcher Street, New Spaulding Street, and Dawn Drive. The turn limitations will be in effect every Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and will be effective immediately. “I’ve witnessed and almost been hit by many cars when walking my dog,” Debbie Malone, a New Fletcher Street resident, explained to the board prior to their unanimous vote. A more hotly debated issue regarding Golden Cove Road was also on the table at last night’s Board of Selectmen meeting. Residents, unhappy about the amount of trucks going up and down Golden Cove Road, are seeking an …

That's because the police sit in their cars snoozing. They need their sleep from doing all the extra traffic details. This way they get to see their names printed each year in the Lowell Sun as one of the town's top earners.   more ›

TELL US: Should Trucks Be Banned From Golden Cove Road?

The town wants to ban trucks from traveling down the residential street heading under I-495. Do you agree?

Between Route 129 (Billerica Road) and Route 110 (Chelmsford Street), Golden Cove Road provides a shortcut for those looking to skip past Town Center traffic. However, town officials have cited concerns with significant amounts of fast moving motorists on the mainly residential road, hoping that the state will grant a ban on larger trucks on the road. That ban was once in place, with a current restriction of a 14 foot, one inch height limit remaining for vehicles moving under the PFC James Alden Doughty Bridge. Today we want to ask your thoughts. Would banning larger trucks force them to into the Town Center or cause delays on Exit 29 on Route 3 (Billerica Road) or Exit 34 on I-495? Are you concerned about the large trucks possibly …
