TELL US: What Are Your Thoughts on Fire Safety in Chelmsford?

From the new fire station to this weekend's fire, what are your thoughts when it comes to fires here in town?

Between several fires this week to other ongoing fire related topics like the Planning Board's site plan review of the new Fire Department headquarters on Jan. 23, fire is a big topic in town these days. So today, we wanted to ask you: what are your thoughts on fire safety here in Chelmsford? Are people in town prepared for a big fire? Is the fire department doing a good job? Sprinklers are mandated for buildings larger than 7,500 square feet, but would requiring them in smaller buildings make a difference or be a economic hardship? What about your thoughts on the effectiveness of smoke detectors and other warning or prevention devices as well as educational efforts like the open house at the North Road Fire Station a few months ago? (…

This is an update of my post as shown above. There is no need for additional clothing at this time, thanks to the tremendous response from the residents of Chelmsford. Gift cards are still needed and they should be dropped off at only ONE location now, and that is at the Center Fire Station on North Road. An account has been created by Enterprise Bank for those who wish to make a monetary …   more ›

Residents Unaccounted For Following Fire At Woodcrest Condos

Firefighters from multiple communities battle stubborn blaze into the early morning hours.

A number of residents remain unaccounted for following a late-night fire that ripped through a 21-unit building at the Woodcrest Condominium complex on 181 Littleton Road on Saturday. The blaze in Building No. 4 (Units 425-445) left dozens of residents homeless, many of whom will be staying for the time being at an emergency shelter being set up at the Chelmsford Senior Center. However, fire officials believe there is a chance not all of the residents made it out of the building safely. "We have reason to believe that there may be unaccounted for residents of the building," said State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan. Neither he nor Chelmsford Chief Michael Curran would say specifically how many residents had not been accounted for as of 2 a.m. "…

Fire Station Cost Estimate Presented

The Board of Selectmen last night also responded to allegations of an Open Meeting Law violation.

Selectmen last night responded to an alleged Open Meeting Law violation and heard about the updated fire station proposal and related criticisms. Bob Joyce, who filed that complaint, spoke in the early open session. He said that while he agrees that the town needs a new center fire station, he disagrees with how the process has been handled recently, as outlined in his complaint filed with the attorney general. "Not that he has to, but I do wish the town manager had told me about the meeting, since I've been asking for such a meeting for weeks," said Joyce. "Maybe there's a gray area in the open meeting law? Were the selectmen notified? Are there minutes? Who went?" Joyce spoke to several of the abutting neighbors who will be affected by …

Paul, thanks for clarifying. I guess the point I was making was that you and the BOS did not initiate any lawsuits. I knew that anything you did was to defend yourself and the town. I wanted to mention that I watched the public input session on the Fire station last night and I thought you and Pat did a great job. It was very informative and I thought you addressed the questions well and in a …   more ›
