Somerville Man Runs Sobriety Checkpoint, Wrecks Car in Chelmsford

Suspect nearly struck State Troopers while running checkpoint.

A Somerville man faces a long list of charges after allegedly running a State Police sobriety checkpoint in Lowell and then wrecking his car in downtown Chelmsford early Saturday morning. Thomas Leedberg, 25, is charged with OUI-liquor (2nd offense), assault with a dangerous weapon (a car), reckless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding and other motor vehicle violations, according to a State Police spokesman. He is expected to be arraigned Monday in Lowell District Court. According to a State Police report, the incident began around 1:25 a.m., when Leedberg approached a sobriety checkpoint established by State Police on Thorndike Road. New Hampshire Man Charged with Drunk Driving After Route 3 Crash

The driver was charged with OUI liquor, OUI drugs, a marked lanes violation and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

A 27-year-old woman is in critical condition after an alleged drunk driver flipped over his car on Route 3 Saturday night. State Police responded to Route 3 northbound in Chelmsford after numerous reports of an erratic driver. Police found the vehicle, a 2006 Ford Focus, rolled over onto its roof, according to State Police. A 27-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle and not identified by State Police, was ejected onto the highway and suffered serious head and leg injuries. She was taken to Lahey Clinic where she is listed in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle, James Turnquist, 22, of Merrimack, NH, was taken to Saints Memorial Hospital in Lowell.
