Member of Chelmsford Delegation Plays Key Role in New Law Regarding Long-Term Care Choices

The law creates standards for long-term care insurance to make such coverage more secure and portable.

  Thanks to a new state law eight years in the making, seniors now have more assurances that the long-term care they need will be available, due in large part to a legislator representing Chelmsford. Spearheaded by Rep. Cory Atkins (D-Concord), Gov. Deval Patrick signed “An Act Establishing Standards for Long-Term Care Insurance,” which ensures the "availability of long-term care insurance policies, protects long-term care applicants from unfair or deceptive sales or enrollment practices, and promotes flexibility and customization according to an individual’s long-term care needs," the governor's office says. It's Atkins Over Benn for State Rep in the 14th Middlsex District

Concord Democrat Cory Atkins will keep the office she claimed more than a decade ago.

On a night filled with good news for Democrats across the board, state Rep. Cory Atkins could party like it was 1999, which is when she won the 14th Middlesex seat she'll hang onto after a challenge from Michael Benn, a Republican from her hometown of Concord. Reached by phone not long after Elizabeth Warren’s victory speech, Atkins spoke excitedly about a bout teamwork among Massachusetts Democrats leading up to Election Day. “What I’m proud of is all of the Democrats,” Atkins said, "Because we worked so hard on coordinating campaigns and it really worked to our advantage. Rep. Atkins Announces Passage of Non-Profit Deferred Compensation Plan

Massachusetts House of Representatives proposes a retirement plan to benefit employees of non-profits.

Representative Cory Atkins joined her colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in passing legislation that allows the State Treasurer’s office to offer a tax-deferred retirement savings plan to employees of non-profit organizations. “There are thousands of people who work for arts organizations, charities, churches, and other small nonprofits,” said Atkins. “These organizations knit our communities together, and this bill will give their employees retirement options they deserve.” According to the Boston Foundation, 56 percent of grassroots organizations with budgets smaller than $250,000 don’t offer any sort of retirement plan to their employees; 14 percent of our state’s …
