Teen Leads the Way in Anti-Bullying Walk

Nicole Bettinelli is a freshman at Chelmsford High School and passionate about putting a stop to bullying.

Nicole Bettinelli, a freshman at Chelmsford High School, knows what it's like to be the target of bullying. The local teen is now organizing an anti-bullying walk, Stand Up and Walk with Me, tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the high school track.  Q: Why did you decide to organize this walk? A: I decided to organize this event because I have witnessed bullying since the second grade and have felt strongly about treating everyone fairly and kind ever since then. I also feel that there is not enough awareness on the significance of bullying and I know that it costs money to bring in anti-bullying programs. Q: Why do you think so much bullying still goes unreported? Do you think Chelmsford High is doing a good job raising awareness or does more need to …

Comcast Donates $600 to Harrington Anti-Bullying Program

Harrington's "bucket filling" program is making a difference in bullying at school.

Harrington School students have been "bucket filling" for more than a year now as part of an anti-bullying program, and thanks to that article on Patch last year, Comcast recently donated $600 to the school for more related materials for the students. As part of the program, students are encouraged to "fill buckets" as part of the "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" program when they perform acts of kindness to one another. On the other hand, "bucket dippers," or students who are not so friendly or have behavior problems, are encouraged to think about their actions and what they could do to change them in the future. Harrington Principal Michael LaCava said he was recently approached by Comcast's Diversity Team after they were looking for a …

Raising Awareness Through Ryan's Story

Nationally-known speaker John Halligan visits Chelmsford to raise awareness about cyber-bullying.

A parent hoping to turn his son's suicide into a learning experience for others spoke to a packed crowd of parents Wednesday night about the very real dangers of cyber bulling. It all started when now John Halligan noticed his seventh-grade son Ryan in emotional agony. “Can you homeschool me? Can we move?” Ryan asked in desperation. Hallingan said one student had started a rumor Ryan was gay that made his online life a living hell, and a girl he talked to on the internet spread his personal secrets around school.   John Halligan tried to figure out what to do, and eventually decided he would teach his son how to fight. It didn’t work. In 2003, at age 13, Ryan Halligan hung himself in the house bathroom. Since then, John Halligan has become…

Bullying Plan Debuts to Public at McCarthy Forum

Parents voiced their feelings about the new policy.

In front of an audience composed of parents, faculty, members of the School Committee and others, the Chelmsford Public Schools district gave its long-awaited presentation of its draft bullying intervention plan on Tuesday in the McCarthy Middle School cafeteria. The purpose of the gathering, with a talk given by Superintendent Frank Tiano and questions forum moderated by School Committee Chair Kathy Duffet was two-fold: to explain the new policy to the public and gather input into how the draft plan could be improved. Before the talk, a brief introduction was given by Duffet, who reminded audience members to "keep in mind this is a sensitive topic" that involves children and when discussing incidents to focus on circumstances and not …

Kindness Campaign Wins at Harrington Elementary

Buckets are filled at Harrington to teach students about respect and kindness.

Bullying has become a national topic of discussion as of late, but it's by no means a new problem. As more schools and youth groups struggle to educate people about the dangers of bullying, Chelmsford has been working toward a more positive school experience for its students for years. The town adopted an anti-bullying rubric well before the state passed a series of anti-bullying laws, and now the Harrington Elementary School is trying a new approach to encouraging positive behavior in their students - one star and bucket at a time. Right inside the main entrance of Harrington Elementary, you'll find a large poster board picture of a smiling bucket. Although there are only a handful of stars in its pocket today, last Friday it held 182 …
