Should Massachusetts Prosecute 17-Year-Olds as Adults?

The Massachusetts house passed legislation to treat most 17-year-olds as juvenile defenders. Is this a compassionate or dangerous change?

Massachusetts is currently one of only 11 states that tries 17-year-olds as adults. A bill passed this week by the state's House of Representatives would make these teenagers juvenile defenders, according to a report by 7News Boston. That will put the commonwealth in line with most other states, where adult court is reserved for individuals 18 and older. The bill still allows the state to try 17-year-olds as adults in serious cases, like murders. But proponents hope the change will reduce cases of rape in the state's prison system by keeping younger inmates away from older, stronger convicts. What do you think? Are we getting too soft on younger defendants? Or is this a justified, compassionate change to protect teenagers? Tell us your …

Well Robert, you seem very set on your position... Just wait until some 15 and 16 year olds commit a violent and grisly murder – maybe a multiple murder. When these happen, the press abets the murders by not publishing the gruesome details. But you wait,...because sooner or later some two-legged animals will do something truly wicked, - maybe to people you care about, - and they'll be tried as …   more ›

State House News Service Weekly Roundup: Exit 10A

Recap and analysis of the week in state government.

Gov. Timothy Murray attempted as graceful an exit as possible from politics, fellow Worcester Democrat Rep. John Fresolo made his hasty escape under an ethics cloud feeling "marginalized" by his peers and pressured to resign, which he did. If not for those two storylines, the focus may have been on the Senate's breakneck budget debate concluding Thursday night as senators wiped their hands clean of 725 amendments and passed a $34 billion fiscal 2014 budget without the need for Senate President Therese Murray to threaten a Friday or Saturday …

The state's Restaurant and Business Alliance said there was "no sign of opposition" at a hearing recently.

The Joint Committee on Revenue in the Massachusetts legislature held a hearing recently on the notion of a potential meals tax holiday for August and one supporting group liking its chances. According to the state's Restaurant and Business Alliance (R.A.B.A), the hearing held Tuesday for the Meals Tax Holiday Bill saw "no sign of opposition" to the measure. Twelve legislators have signed on to the bill primarily sponsored by Rep. Keiko Orrall of Lakeville and Sen. Michael O. Moore of Millbury. If passed, the legislation would go into effect from Sunday, Aug. 11 through Thursday, Aug. 15. "We should offer a Meals Tax Holiday to benefit employees and small local business owners inside Massachusetts to help stimulate the economy," said Dave …

Just a thought ... food is food and if we don't pay tax for it in the supermarket or even at the garden centers when we buy veggie/herb plants & seeds, I've never understood restaurant meal tax. Also, I don't really see how just one week free of said tax can to that much to "stimulate the economy." Someone, prey tell?   more ›
