Chelmsford Town Common offers a calm gathering space in the center of town. Visitors can read on benches near beautfiul flowers or stroll along the green grass and admire the scenery. The Common has a monument dedicated to all reisdents who have served in the Armed Forces and another dedicated to those who fought in the Revolutionary War. The Middlesex Canal Toll House, the oldest canal toll house in America, also sits as sort of a monument in the Chelmsford Common. It was built in 1832. The Middlesex Canal, more than 20 miles long, once linked the Merrimack River with other locations down to the Boston suburbs. Grain, lumber, and even passengers were transported by horse-drawn barges down the canal.  Soon enough, railroads were established and the Middlesex Canal was no more. Now, the small building is used as an information booth for visitors. Stop by in the summer and you might run into the Chelmsford Farmers' Market.
