Students Volunteer Time to Help Clean Up Chelmsford

The May event brought together Chelmsford students to help clean up the town.

With spring in full force and summer just around the corner, the sun is starting to shine with much more regularity. And recently, a group of Chelmsford students did their part to make sure the town is brightened up as well.'

Resident Tanya Dimitrov organized a town-wide clean up day last month, which gave young residents the chance to throw on some rubber gloves, grab some trash bags, and hit the streets to give back to the community.

"Chelmsford usually does an excellent job of keeping its town clean, but in the cusp of spring, snow melted to display the accumulated piles of trash over the winter months," said Dimitrov. "With spring in bloom, and green grasses budding, the last thing that anybody wanted to see were candy wrappers and Dunkin' Donuts foam cups lining the streets."

Participants met at Chelmsford High School to draw up their plans on how they would divide for the clean up. Students headed to Riverneck Road, Billerica Road, Richardson Road, North Road, Crooked Springs Road, Parkhurst Road and the area around the high school to begin their clean up.

In total, students collected more than 20 bags of trash from around Chelmsford.

"It was a lesson well-learned for everyone who participated and left a lasting impact," said Dimitrov. "Students now understand the effects that humans have on the environment. More importantly, students understand that just picking up one piece of trash can make a difference."
