Fire Department Urges Caution During Heat Wave

With temperatures expected to remain above 90 degrees for the near future, the Chelmsford Fire Department asks residents to look out for one another.

With things continuing to heat up in Chelmsford, the Fire Department is asking residents to be cautious as they face the summer conditions.

Temperatures are expected to remain above 90 degrees at least through the weekend, with Chelmsford officially in the midst of a heat wave.

Chelmsford Fire Deputy of Operations Mike Donoghue said residents must stay hydrated, wear loose fitting clothing, and take other precautions when forced to be outside in the current conditions.

“Residents need to change the way they work during the heat,” said Donoghue. “It’s important to take frequent breaks and pay attention to themselves, how they’re feeling, and how people they’re working with are feeling as well.”

Donoghue said he keeps a close eye on his own department when they are forced to go out on calls in the high heat. Firefighters are not put into heavy equipment unless it is completely necessary, and they work in shorter durations.

According to Donoghue, it’s currently a less populated time of year in Chelmsford as many residents are on vacation. That may be playing a part in the low number of heat-related calls the Fire Department has fielded.

Residents are encouraged to stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible during the heat wave. If there are residents who do not have air conditioning, they can go to public buildings, like the library or area stores, to cool down.

“Our advice in the heat of the summer is the same as it is during the brutal cold of the winter,” said Donoghue. “Keep an eye on your neighbors or anyone you know who may need a hand.”
