Upstart Chelmsford Baseball Shining on the Diamond

The Lions are the No. 11 seed, but they earned two upset wins to reach the North Division 1 semifinal.

Chelmsford baseball entered the postseason as a double digit seed. But the rest of North Division 1 is taking notice of the Lions after a pair of upset wins.

The local nine earned the No. 11 seed after a regular season record of 10-10.

In the first round of the tournament, Chelmsford upended No. 6 Acton-Boxboro, which boasted a record of 13-7 coming in, by an 11-6 margin.

But the upsets didn't stop there.

In the quarterfinal round, Chelmsford stunned No. 3 Billerica, not even allowing them to cross home plate. The Lions clipped their nearby foe by a 5-0 margin, advancing to the semifinal round against another upstart team.

Methuen awaits Chelmsford in the semifinal, having upset No. 7 Lawrence and No. 2 Cambridge Rindge and Latin along the way.

The semifinal tilt is scheduled for Thursday night, and it won't be a long drive for Chelmsford fans. The tilt takes place at 7 p.m. on the diamond of Lowell's Alumni Field. The winner of that game takes on either Andover or Waltham in the championship game.

On another kind of diamond, the Chelmsford softball team hits the field Monday in its first playoff game.

The Lady Lions play No. 10 Revere at 4 p.m. at home in the first round of the North Division 1 tournament. The winner earns a date with No. 2 Concord-Carlisle, which edged Everett, 3-2.
