Chelmsford Girls, Boys Basketball Teams Ready for Playoff Run

The league champion girls basketball team and league runner up boys team are both in prime position as the postseason arrives.

The Chelmsford High School boys and girls basketball teams have something in common. They each put together an impressive regular season and are primed to make some noise as the playoffs arrive.

Thanks to a sparkling overall record of 17-3 and a Merrimack Valley Small School Division mark of 12-2, the Lady Lions earned the regular season crown.

The boys team, meanwhile, put together a strong season of its own and finished in second place in the Merrimack Valley Small School Division. The locals ended the year with a 14-7 record and a league mark of 8-7, behind only league champion Tewksbury.

Each team has gone about its business in a different way. For the girls team, the average margin of victory has been comfortable. The Lady Lions have had seven games decided by single digits. They're scoring an average of 54 points per game while allowing only 43 points per game.

The boys team, meanwhile, has had some closer decision. Chelmsford is scoring 66 points per game on average while allowing its opponents to score 62 per contest. Of their 21 games, the Lions have been involved in 11 single digit contests.

Next up for each square is the postseason. Brackets are expected to be announced by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association this weekend.
