New Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is putting up five pounds of chocolate turtles from Dorchester's Phillips Candy House and will make a donation to Denver's public library. Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock, for his part, is betting some Denver green chili and ski equipment.
Oh, and the loser wears the winning team's jersey at the next U.S. Conference of Mayors.
There was also the requisite milquetoast teasing. Walsh's team added an Instagram video of the new mayor ribbing Hancock about the bet.
Walsh has some pretty big shoes to fill in this area. Mayor Thomas Menino could be considered the Jimmy the Greek of mayors, winning far more than he lost in mayor-versus-mayor wagers. Hizzoner collected on eight pro championship bets in 14 tries.
Here's a sample of some of the food items Menino won for Boston's honor:
- Smoked salmon
- Beer from Vancouver and St. Louis
- Wild British Columbia smoked salmon
- Songs from various Philadelphia musicians
- Toasted ravioli
- Bissinger chocolate
- Quiznos sandwiches
- Tortilla chips
- Ice cream
- Cajun-spiced chicken
- Krispy Kreme doughnuts
