Should School Start Before Labor Day?

Let's discuss this controversial end-of-summer topic.

You may want to have the kids leave the room for this discussion.

Are they gone? Ok. Here goes.

School starts again in just a couple weeks.

Chelmsford kids go back to school Wednesday, Sept. 5. That's a couple days after Labor Day. But in a some school districts, the kids start school in August and get out earlier at the end of the school year.

To most kids, the idea of starting in August is unthinkable. To them, Labor Day weekend is that last hurrah of the summer, one more opportunity to grab some summer fun without the responsibilities of homework. But advocates of earlier return dates say it offsets snow days and gets the kids out earlier in June (or May). And a cycnical observer might point out that it also gives parents an opportunity to enjoy a few relaxing summer days without the kids around.

I do not advocate starting school before Labor Day. I prefer to have school start the day after Labor Day. (Rather than the Wednesday after the holiday). I would much prefer to see the discussion focus on combining the winter and spring vacations into a single one-week break that could occur in March or April. That February vacation is unnecessary, falling so close after the Christmas vacation.

I agree with Eileen, especially regarding a one-week "spring break."

No starting before Labor Day, for teachers or students, please! Don't forget, if the students go back on the day after Labor Day, the teachers are still going back the week before. I'd say leave that last week in August as a vacation week for everyone, enjoy Labor Day, and THEN head back (teachers then students). Just like the old days. Nothing wrong with enjoying summer vacation.

The third week of June is when school ends, which seems quite late; I definitely think the week-long breaks could be combined into one, as E C-C suggested.

The Chelmsford School Comittee put out a survery last summer regarding this topic. 240 staff and teachers and 1,660 parents completed the survey. The August 16, 2011 minutes show the results: Whether to start before or after Labor Day: Staff prefers starting before and parents prefer starting after Labor Day. School vacation preferences: Two proposed changes would be to eliminate Feb. vacation week or eliminate Feb. and April vacation weeks creating one vacation week in March. Both the staff and parents were in favor of no change from the present calendar vacation structure. Although the results were not necessarily what I would prefer, I am thankful that they asked the questions and went with the majority.

I think teachers should work all year with 2 weeks vacation as many. Charter schools should be taken over with compatence in the teachers to keep their jobs. It is time to compete with the world and i want the USA to be number 1. No more jobs for life, compete, compete, thats the world we live in.
