Van Liew Sends Out New Mailer: What's Your Take?

One of Chelmsford's most polarizing figures has sent out a new mailing piece. Do you have an opinion?

Roland Van Liew sent out another mailing (pictured) to Chelmsford residents recently, and today we want to get your thoughts.

Van Liew has advocated against various town officials, alleging wrongdoing in the construction of 9 North Road. He also pursued a recall election against four selectmen, and ran for the Board of Selectmen in 2013.

There are very few people active in Chelmsford local government who do not have strong feelings for Van Liew either for him or against him, but he still feels strongly over his viewpoints.

"I don't think it's condescending to assume that Chelmsford residents don't approve of graft," he told Chelmsford Patch. "Anyone who complains about the information in the 'Why Perjury Matters' piece is clearly more interested in predatory developers than in good and honest government."

You can see the full mailer here, what are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.

As someone who is new to town I am not familiar with the history here so I can't comment at all on the opinions offered in the letter. I can say that I received a copy in the mail and attempted to read it, however it was very poorly written, rambling, petty at times with inconsistent formatting and a stream of consciousness delivery style. Whether or not the information in it is accurate, the structural issues made it difficult to take seriously.

As with all previous mailings. He has turned into our town comudgeon(sp) with a bit of a following and a bit of condescension. Welcome to Chelmsford ... hope your heart will cherish it as does mine, warts and all.

We received the mailing too, and like all similar mailings, it went into the recycling bin. My Christmas wish for the sender is that he take a fraction of his wealth next year and spend it on something that really helps this town, like supporting our less fortunate citizens, donating to the Food Pantry, supporting the Table of Plenty, buying some books or computers, or playground equipment for our schools. Those things would show him to be a kind man whose heart is with the town, rather than a mean-spirited person who can't get off an issue that was resolved long ago. Chris, welcome to Chelmsford, and I hope you come to love it here as I do.

What kills me is that people focus on the mistakes in the mailings and not on the overall message. The bottom line is that the BOS and the Town Manager are screwing up this town and people CONTINUE to vote for the same idiots time and time again. 40% of people voted to recall the ENTIRE BOS with no replacement, but instead of taking that as a warning, they took it as confirmation that they are doing a bang-up job! Forget about Roland, 9 North Road, 40B, Fire Station, DPW, sewer project...they did exactly the OPPOSITE of what the OVERWHELMING majority of residents wanted and they keep getting elected. What the hell is wrong with you people?? Do you like being taken advantage of? Do you like higher taxes? Do you like more traffic? Do you like Water restrictions? Do you like tax overrides?? I bet you're all saying "No". Then why in heaven's sake do you keep supporting all the people that make those things happen?? We are going to wake up one day and Chelmsford will be Billerica...or LOWELL! I've never seen so many people support local officials who are doing such a terrible job. You people get what you deserve. And as the rest of us move out of town for places with better schools and lower taxes...you just keep right on screwing yourselves over....

John ... how 'bout you run next election?
Paul December 23, 2013 at 11:14 PM
Only a 5.5% tax increase from last year. LOL. I'll vote for you in a second John.

Andy boy ... in my email I received a comment, addressed to me specifically, that doesn't appear here ... could that be the one you deleted? If so, I would like to know why since it simply spoke a person's opinion of politics in this town, as many do all the time.
Andrew Sylvia (Editor) December 28, 2013 at 09:15 AM
Sure. 99 percent of it was fine, but there was one part about sexual organs that was not okay under the terms of use. If that person resubmits the comment without that part, it's fine.
Paul December 28, 2013 at 09:30 AM
How was that comment any worse than you referring to it as, "sexual organs?" No four letter words. Going a bit overboard on the censorship don't you think?
Tara Dactyl December 28, 2013 at 06:11 PM
This is a test: "The choirgirl chased the choirmaster 'round and 'round the church and finally caught him by the organ."

Nope. Those are the terms of service for this site.
Anna Bucciarelli December 28, 2013 at 06:36 PM
Ah, well, I got the message anyway and happen to agree with it, tho I hardly feel it was in bad taste, I realize that Andy has a job to do and so he does. You know who you are that sent it and I appreciate your response to my question above. What you said makes sense and I think there is truth in your remarks. So, what do we do, live in fear? There has got to be a better way, you think?
Andrew Sylvia (Editor) December 28, 2013 at 06:39 PM
Haha, now that one Tara, that gave me a chuckle. Paul, just to elaborate: if I have to choose between you complaining at me and some angry parent complaining at me in the grocery store or wherever in town complaining at me, I'm choosing you. If you used your full name like Anna, it might be slightly different, but this still is supposed to be a family friendly place.
Tom Christiano December 29, 2013 at 06:51 AM
Thanks Andrew, for maintaining basic standards of decency here on the Patch. I also do not allow any profanity on the "Chelmsford Reps & Residents" Group pages on Facebook.
Paul December 29, 2013 at 09:51 AM
Everyone received the comment. There was nothing profane about it. What does using your full name have anything to do with this?
Andrew Sylvia (Editor) December 29, 2013 at 11:53 PM
I take comments more seriously when they come from people that use their full name, like Tom did here or when they use their photo in their profile, also like Tom did here. When I have to make a judgment call, I'm more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to people who are willing to stand behind their comments by revealing their offline identity.
John Doe December 30, 2013 at 10:36 AM
Given the description, it was my comment that got deleted. I do not recall exactly what it was, other than justifying why you won't see my name on a ballot. Andy, sorry for violating your TOS. If anyone who received the comment still has it and would like to repost it without the offending line, please feel free to do so.
Andrew Sylvia (Editor) December 30, 2013 at 01:10 PM
John, everything else in that comment was absolutely okay, and I accept your apology, and I'm sorry if I jumped the gun a bit here. Whenever I can, I ask if people can repost comments without the bad part, and I should have done that here.
John Doe December 30, 2013 at 02:26 PM
No worries...I appreciate that you are fair and let both sides post their thoughts. I was trying to bring a little levity to my post, but now that I know where the line is, I'll make sure not to cross it again!
Paul December 30, 2013 at 04:40 PM
Sorry Andrew. My full name is Paul Doe.
Anna Bucciarelli December 30, 2013 at 06:29 PM
Cute Paul:).
