Stoneham Man Charged With Showing Chelmsford Police Expired Badge

The Lowell Sun reported that the man was attempting to get a driver to slow down using a badge from the 1970s.

A man attempted to slow down a driver on Route 3 in Chelmsford over the summer, not an uncommon occurrence by law enforcement personnel. There was a problem though -- the man was not a police officer and the badge has not been valid for several decades.

As a result of the incident, which occurred in June, Lawrence Bowman, 62, of Stoneham, was summonsed to Lowell District Court recently and charged with impersonating a police officer, according to a report in the Lowell Sun.

The newspaper reported that Bowman pleaded not guilty in Lowell District Court this week. He allegedly drove erratically near another vehicle and flashed the badge at them in an effort to get them to slow down, but the sheriff's badge was from the 1970s where Bowman was employed briefly before leaving the job.
