The crash occurred at 12:50 a.m. on Sunday on I-495 South near the Chelmsford rest area.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating an early Sunday morning crash on Interstate 495 in Chelmsford that took the lives of an adult man and a young child.

Police said they were called to I-495 South in Chelmsford at 12:50 a.m. for a report of a single vehicle crash.

Preliminary investigation indicates to police that a 2004 Toyota Camry was driving south when it veered to the right and crossed over a raised island that separates the highway from the Chelmsford rest stop.

The Toyota then continued through the grass and struck a guardrail. Both the man and the child, who was secured in a car seat inside the vehicle, were declared deceased on scene.

Massachusetts State Police are continuing to investigate the crash, and have not released the names or hometowns of the victims as they continue to work on next-of-kin notification.
