Police Expect Major Delays After Sinkhole Develops on Boston Road

According to the Chelmsford Police Department, it will take several days to fix a sinkhole that developed on Sunday.

Updated Monday at 2:26 a.m.: Chelmsford Police provided the complete details of the detour in a Sunday night Facebook update.

  • Boston Road south is detoured down Warren Ave to Turnpike Road to Mill Road and back to Boston Road.
  • Boston Road north is detoured onto Parker Road to Acton Road (Rt.27) and into Chelmsford Center.
"Appropriate signage is in place," police added in their post. "Officers will be assisting with traffic flow during AM commute as needed."

Original Story: A sinkhole developed Sunday on Boston Road, and police said the area will be closed for several days while repairs are made.

Police posted Sunday on the department's Facebook page that due to flooding, drivers are asked to seek alternate routes.

The road remains closed from Hall Road to Brian Road, and according to an update by police Sunday afternoon, that will continue to be the case until later in the week.

"Crews carefully working around natural gas and other utilities," police posted. "This road will be under construction for several days. Detours are in place. Expect major delays and avoid the area during weekday commutes."

Detours have been put in place at Warren Ave. and Concord Road, while police said drivers can also use Parker Road to Hall Road.
