Chelmsford Native Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver in California

Rachel Anne Morrison, 27, had ties to Chelmsford. She graduated in 2005 as the valedictorian of the Academy of Notre Dame in Tyngsboro.

A Chelmsford native studying in California was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash while walking in a crosswalk with a friend on Friday night.

Encinita Patch reported that Rachel Anne Morrison, 27, was walking at about 10:15 p.m. at the intersection of Camino Del Mar and Coast Boulevard in the San Diego suburb when a driver allegedly ran a stop sign and struck her at a high rate of speed.

The second pedestrian was able to avoid the vehicle, but Morrison was declared deceased at the hospital shortly after arrival.

Sheriff's deputies and the San Diego Police Department tracked evidence and were able to locate Christopher Stockmeyer, 41, and place him under arrest.

Stockmeyer was charged with suspicion of felony drunk driving, felony hit and run, and vehicular manslaughter.

The Lowell Sun reported that Morrison, a Chelmsford native, was a star athlete and 2005 valedictorian at the Academy of Notre Dame in Tyngsboro.

Morrison was a PhD student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego according to other media reports.
