Chelmsford Fire Department Developing September 11 Memorial

No town funding will be used to build the memorial, though residents are invited to donate to help build it.

Chelmsford will soon have a new fire station. And along with it will be a memorial honoring the countless lives impacted by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The Chelmsford Fire Department is in the process of planning the September 11 Memorial, which will be located to the right of the new fire headquarters.

When the memorial is completed, a walkway will weave through a grassy area that leads to the granite memorial. The memorial itself will consist of two granite columns, each 11 feet high and nine inches wide, the town said.

In addition, there will be two granite benches that will be surrounded by plants and flowers with two Chelmsford residents who lost their lives during the attacks.

Andrew Green and David Bernard were the two local men who were killed as a result of the actions on September 11.

Residents will also be able to visit the memorial during the evening hours as there will be two flagpoles, one flying the American Flag and another flying the Firefighting Flag, that will be illuminated properly.

The town has already begun receiving donations from area businesses to help support the memorial. No town money will be used for the construction of the memorial.

Anyone interested in donating can send checks made out to the 9/11 Memorial Fund to either the Chelmsford Fire Department 7 North Road, Chelmsford, or Enterprise Bank, 185 Littleton Road, Chelmsford.
