Reflection on Summer Past

Summer reflection on a cold autumn morning

I recently had an episode of the 21st Century psychosis of not having a computer for a day due to a hard drive failure.  Upon repair, I cleaned up the clutter and realized in a senior moment (or senior time lapse) I forgot to do the end of summer blog.  As the cold days of Winter approach (it’s 7 am and 22 degrees outside), we should have some warm thoughts and reflections on the Summer.

Chelmsford people have the advantage of becoming either Maine or Cape people in the Summer.  I prefer Maine, although my summer ocean swimming is long gone, practiced decades ago at beaches unfortunately on the news due to Sandy.  However, in recent summers we have gone to the Cape to be with my daughter, son-in-law and grandkids, as it is closer to where they live than Maine.

It could be the Yankee in me (or the Yankee in them since to the horror of my wife and I they are rabid Yankee fans), or maybe I'm just getting old and have old reference points, but I'm shocked at the cost of weekly rentals in the Cape.  We've taken cruises for less and a cruise includes meals and entertainment.  But, as we learn as we age, it is their world and they have the reins.

The Cape is enjoyable seeing it through the eyes of preschoolers and early elementary school grade students, especially at low tide.  Little ones are fascinated at simple things we ignore, like snail tracks and moving hermit crabs in the sand at low tide.  On the other hand, their attention span, as to be expected, is limited for a whale watch (although my son-in-law had a great time acting very different from his usual daytime corporate lawyer demeanor).  Like any vacation, there is always serendipity: I ran into and spent time with someone who is now an adult whom I knew as a child, a good example of the principle 'one of the good things about getting old is you get to see how things turn out'.

Never made it to Maine this summer with its rocky coast line.  However, on a rainy day I made it to Marconi Beach and took some great pictures.

I will have to add Maine to the list for 2013.

And a great Thanksgiving to you and yours as we start the Holiday Season.
