SNOW IS A BAD WORD

Post from Jenn:

Happy Holidays Friends and Family,

We’ve been really busy at our house the past month with physical therapy, occupational therapy and lokomat.  Rachel’s schedule still has daily PT and OT twice a week.  She is also back to school full time (I am really happy about that); she is already back at gymnastics and will go back to dance the first week of the year.  She is using her walker all day now…no more wheelchair (YAHOO!) and she has started taking a few steps without holding on to something.  Here she is hitting a ball while letting go of her walker.  You can see Rachel making her way around the dance floor at the Brestyan’s Holiday Party.  Would you ever think she had surgery only 9 weeks ago? Her progress is really amazing!

The snow last week provided a bit of a challenge for us for many reasons.  Rachel cannot wear boots because her leg braces don’t fit into them so she can only wear her sneakers. Also, imagine the feel of plastic on your feet with the cold never mind getting snow in your sneakers. When it snows as much as it did the walk way is quite narrow so she cannot use walker which meant I needed to carry her.   It took us about 20 minutes to leave the house and many tears were shed because of all of the logistics….carrying her out and slipping with her etc. As I was buckling her in her car seat she said “Mom, I’m sorry it’s so hard.” Then I realized that she was taking my crying personally. I told her that she had nothing to be sorry for that it is the snow’s fault and then I made a joke. I said that the way I see it we need to either:

1) move to a warmer climate where there isn’t any snow

2) find a husband

3) build a garage.

She couldn’t stop laughing…like from her toes laughing and we both decided that #3 is likely the best way to go!  So our plan it to somehow build a garage before next winter as carrying her is likely not going to be an option much longer.  In the meantime we are prepared better for the next snow storm because I pulled out the mac daddy of all sleds…an LL Bean sled that Rachel got last year and we’ll just make it a game getting from the front door to the car!  Check out the photos in the photo gallery.

Happy Holidays from the Solo/Corr Family.
