Chelmsford Cheerleaders Ready For Championship But Need Fundraising Help

Pending a qualifying score on Saturday, a Chelmsford Pop Warner cheerleading team will be invited to compete for a National Championship in Florida. However, they will need monetary help from the community to get there.

Chelmsford’s Pop Warner cheerleaders have a shot at a national title next month, but the obstacles they still must overcome will likely be bigger than the thousands of miles they still have to travel.

Pending a likely qualifying score at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield on Saturday, Chelmsford’s D-White Cheerleading team will be entered to compete for a national championship at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida next month.

However, if the team can’t raise $21,000 by Nov. 18, they’ll have to stay home.

Chelmsford Pop Warner Cheerleading director Missie Reynolds said that as of Nov. 5, the team had only raised approximately $1500, in total, hoping to get more fundraising from corporate and private sources to avoid undue stress on families of the girls on the team.

“We know there’s been a lot of fundraising done recently with the turf fields, but we hope we can get as many people behind these girls as we can,” said Reynolds. “There are 11 girls going down to Florida who want to represent Chelmsford and New England proudly.”

The invitation was somewhat unexpected as the team would have been at the Pee-Wee level if not for the fact that Chelmsford had no Pee-Wee Pop Warner Football team this year, keeping them at the Jr. Pee-Wee level and making them the only Jr. Pee-Wee small team in their division in New England, automatically qualifying them as the New England division champions.

Despite the luck, Reynolds says that the team has worked hard and continued to build upon camaraderie developed over several years working together on the same squad.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, even if it fell into our laps, “she said. “We would have been in the hunt as Pee-Wees, but the girls got the lucky stick this year. Still, we couldn’t be any prouder; they’ve worked very hard this season.”
