I’m not a movie critic. I’m not a food critic, either. I’m a foodie, food blogger, freelance writer, and hoping-to-be-published novelist. And since I’m passionate about all of those activities I had tons of fun at the movies last night watching “Chef,” written and directed by and starring Jon Favreau. I’ve always liked his work and this movie did not disappoint. From the 5-star cast (including Dustin Hoffman, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara, and Oliver Platt) to the uplifting story, believable performances, and mouthwatering food scenes, “Chef” held my interest and left me wanting more of everything in it. Including the travel scenes, which occurred in some fabulous food places, not the least of which is New Orleans, one of my favorite food destinations.

Favreau plays a once-celebrated Chef who aches to continue creating cutting edge cuisine, but sells out to his less imaginative restaurateur boss in order to keep his job. Which he doesn’t do anyway. The results of some impulsive and uninformed social media activity (how many of us can say we haven’t been there?) lead him down an interesting path to culinary redemption and happiness. The movie takes viewers on a fun-filled trip. I highly recommend joining the cast and crew on their journey.

“The Lunchbox” is another recent food-filled favorite film. The food itself plays a smaller role in this cinematic adventure. But the surrounding story of a woman trying to please an unfaithful husband by pouring her heart into her meals reminded me of how much a loving touch can almost magically enhance any dish. The acting in this film is spot-on, the story is realistic and uplifting, the characters endearing, and the entire experience enjoyable.

If you’re all about food, good films, or both, find these movies in your local area, and enjoy!
