What Are Chelmsford's Most Dangerous Intersections?

A recent report released the most dangerous intersections in the state and region.

Where are the most dangerous intersections in town?
Where are the most dangerous intersections in town?

A recent study listed the most dangerous intersections in Massachusetts and New England, and while no Chelmsford intersections made the list it got us wondering. Where do you think the most dangerous spot is in town?

The intersection of Mystic Avenue and the Fellsway in Somerville was ranked as the “most dangerous” intersection in the state and the third most dangerous one in New England in a recent study by GoLocal Worcester, an online publication.

Also among the most dangerous was Bridge St. and Veterans of Foreign Wars Highway, along with Veterans of Foreign Wars Highway and Varnum Ave., both Lowell intersections.

The site’s methodology looked at total number of accidents, fatalities, injuries and property-damage-only crashes at each intersection.

Looking at just Chelmsford, what do you find to be the most dangerous intersection? Is there a road you avoid because it's too dangerous? Let us know in the comments section below.

I'd have to say that the converted Drum Hill rotary is the craziest place in town to get around. The lane markings and barriers are confusing and dangerous. I have seen so many near misses, and actual accidents there, as people cut across two or three lanes unexpectedly to get off. Even as a long-time Chelmsford resident, I occasionally forget where I am and get in the wrong lane, so have to go around again! I avoid that intersection whenever I can.

I will say that having the lights at the rotary does increase the safety factor a little bit, since most traffic is moving slowly now.

The intersection of Carlisle Rd and Riverneck Rd is horrible, especially during commuter hours. You can't see the cars coming over the bridge until it's almost too late.

I couldn't agree more about the insane/dangerous rotary at Drum Hill ! Two nights ago, after taking Route 3 north and that exit, due to the non-sensical pattern, I ended up getting flipped back onto Route 3 (south) trying to get onto Old Westford Road. Ended up going back down Route 3 south, then took 495 south, then back roads, to get to a Chelmsford destination. Ridiculous waste of time, gas and very dangerous ! Lights or no lights, that rotary pattern is a traffic planning disaster.

Ok as someone who has been towing in chelmsford for the police here is my list Davis at Graniteville Summer at Billerica the lights at Market Basket and Stop N Shop on RT 110 Mill RD at rt 129 Anywhere along the Trailer Park Hunt at RT 110 Stretch of Tyngsboro rd from vinyl SQ to the Tyngsboro line. RT 27 at High ST Boston RD at Concord RD the rotary at the onramp from RT north, surprisingly the rest of the rotary is spared many times. These are the popular ones I have witnessed and worked.

Bring back Chicken Corner! I will not drive towards the Center from Route 110 West. Traffic is coming out of Pizza restaurant and Route 3A N and then try to get over to take a left onto Route 110. Hunt Road intersection is another.

Davis at graniteville but better since they added the g flashing lights. People drive way too fast on Graniteville heading toward Drum Hill...and it's a blind intersection if you're crossing it.

Yes, all that Andrew G. mentioned, plus the one I hate most since I need to use it frequently, is turning either left or right off of Turnpike onto Mill ... poor visibility in either direction, ugly and frightful.
Eileen Cushing-Craig February 28, 2014 at 07:54 AM
Anna, I live in that neighborhood, and I know what you mean about the visibility. I have an SUV, which helps with the visibility somewhat, but that's a tough intersection, especially during the day when you don't have the headlights to warn you of oncoming traffic.
Eileen Cushing-Craig February 28, 2014 at 07:58 AM
Another tough one is driving Parker Road between Rt. 4 and Rt. 27. It is very narrow and winding, and then when you come out to Rt. 27, it is extremely hard to take a left or a right onto 27. The visibility there is bad, due to trees and the angle of the road. You have to edge into the intersection just to be able to see what's coming from both directions on 27.

Drum hill rotary is a disaster! People are constantly running red lights..With cars coming off rt 3 at such high speeds it's very dangerous. Poorly designed!!

I usually avoid the rotary whenever possible but with the potholes being the size of sink holes I've been taking my chances! These roads are a mess!
