The Power of One at South Row

This program taught our students about the types of bullying that can exist: physical, verbal, exclusion and cyber-bullying. All forms of bullying are unacceptable and hurtful.

South Row recently had a visit from "The Power of One" program. This program first defined bullying as intentional acts meant to hurt someone who is targeted repeatedly. This program taught our students about the types of bullying that can exist: physical, verbal, exclusion and cyber-bullying. All forms of bullying are unacceptable and hurtful. It also teaches children about the roles involved in bullying: The bully, the target and the bystander. It reviewed what we can do if we are the target of bullying or a bystander to bullying – tell an adult as number one. But also, if safe, get the target out of the situation and tell the bully to stop what they are doing.

During this show, several scenes of types of bullying were acted out by our performers, Latisha and Topher. Then, some of our students were called to the stage to help learn the appropriate response of a bystander to help a target. Finally, the "power of one" was revealed to our students showing them a mirror that allowed them to see that they EACH have the power of one within them to stand up against bullying. As a school, we all took the pledge to stand up against bullying and had an opportunity to sign the pledge which is now hanging in our main corridor. The pledge states: "I will not bully others. I will not stand by while others are bullied. I will report and deal with bullying whenever I see it because I have the POWER OF ONE." This program tied into many of our PRIDE core values: Students always showing RESPECT for one another and not engaging in bullying behavior; Students showing INTEGRITY by making the right choices even when no one is looking and not engaging in bullying behavior, but also if they see bullying, to report it. Students showing EMPATHY and standing up against bullying as a bystander to know that if they were the target, it wouldn't feel good.
