Chelmsford’s Speech and Debate Team Earns Recognition at Recent Massachusetts Speech and Debate League Tournaments

Chelmsford High School's Speech and Debate team recently participated in 2 state tournaments, earning a number of individual wins as well as winning first place at both tournaments in the small school division.

CHELMSFORD, MA, November 12, 2013 – Chelmsford High School’s Speech and Debate team recently participated in 2 state tournaments, earning a number of individual wins as well as winning first place at both tournaments in the small school division.

The first tournament was at Revere High School on October 19th. We had 5 students participating with several people winning trophies in the following events:

•    Peter Breitweiser  and Mrudula Gadgil– 2nd place in Duo Interpretation
•    Mrudula Gadgil  - 3rd place in Impromptu
•    Samuel Weitzen  - 3 rd place in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking
•    1st place small school division


The second tournament was this past Saturday at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High school. We had 9 students with individual successes in the following events:

•    Manasi Danke – 1rst  place in Declamation
•    Erin Phillips and Lucas Murotore – 6th place in Duo Interpretation
•    Lucas Murotore  - 6th place in Dramatic Interpretation
•    1st place small school division

The team is off to an exciting start to the year. These were the first 2 of a total of 16 tournaments that the team will be competing in, culminating in the State Championship in the spring. Chelmsford is very pleased to have been chosen by the Massachusetts Speech and Debate League to be the host this year’s Debate championship, at Chelmsford High School, on March 29th.

With 7 years of experience, Chelmsford High School’s Speech and Debate team is a small team that has earned a large number of trophies in many state tournaments.  Last year, Chelmsford students were finalists at the State Championship and sent its first student, Erin Phillips, to the National Tournament held this past June in Birmingham, AL.  The team earned Charter Member status with the National Forensics League in 2012. Chelmsford’s Speech and Debate team is coached by Peter Zopes and Melinda Phillips.
