This summer program is designed for flutists who want to improve their playing, meet fellow flute players, experience what it is like to play in a flute choir/ensemble, and have a great time while making music! This program meets Monday-Thursday for two weeks at the Chelmsford Center for the Arts.
Beginner Ensemble (9:30am-11:00am): Typically grades 5-7. Students in this group review fingerings of notes on and around the staff, reading whole, half, dotted, quarter, and 8th note rhythms, breathing techniques, playing musically, and how to consistently maintain a focused sound on their instrument. The beginner ensemble will explore major scales and how important scale study is when learning an instrument. This group also includes students in younger grades who take private lessons. Students will work with the Director and advanced assistants on flute choir pieces.
Intermediate/Advanced Ensemble (11:15am-12:45pm): Typically grades 7-12. Students in this group work on reading more complicated rhythms (8th notes, 16th notes, dotted rhythms, mixed rhythms and meter), and reading and learning fingerings to higher notes on the staff. Inter/Adv. students will focus on breathing techniques, phrasing, and how to improve their musicality. This group will work on more challenging pieces of flute choir music with faster tempos and more parts to play. This group will also explore major and minor scales to improve musicianship and to make all of their flute playing easier! This group is welcome to volunteer in assisting the Beginner ensemble and gain some experience in co-teaching in a small group setting.
All flutists should bring a binder or folder ready to fill with new music! A couple of pencils and a bottle of water would also be smart items to bring along! The rehearsal space will be upstairs in the performance hall. A culmination concert featuring every flutist in the camp will be held at 11am on 8/22/12. Free T-shirts to be provided to all members for the culmination concert!
