Vivian ... Too cute! Wondering who the artist is that did up these cartoon-ie posters ... nice job.

I was wondering whether this class actually happened yesterday. I was ready to come with my pup andRead More the skies opened up. Was sad to miss it and hope that the weather cooperates tomorrow.

PS ... don't forget your sunscreen, even tho the sun is not yet that strong, not only to preventRead More the dreaded disease, but to avoid more dark sunspots!!! The very bain of my existence ... wish I could find a solution to ridding these, have tried all the fancy cosmetics that boast about getting rid of them, even lemon juice, but nothing works. Got any ideas? I'm thinking of trying peroxide next.
Vivian Merrill April 19, 2013 at 01:41 pm
Gotta love the internet-where everything is for sale! LOL-I did a quick search, and after weedingRead More out the ads, I came up with several options: dermatologist prescribed bleaching cream (because the over the counter stuff doesn't work more often than not), several sessions of microdermabrasion at a day spa, or laser surgery (very expensive, and usually not covered by insurance). My guess is that peroxide might take longer than a bleaching cream-I really have no idea. My version of make-up in the morning consists of brushing my teeth. Maybe my hair if I remember. Thanks for the advice, Anna!
Anna Bucciarelli April 20, 2013 at 02:50 pm
Make-up? Me too ... occasionally I too remember to comb, but generally I just wash and wear. IRead More just hate these dalmation-looking spots. I do know from a visit to my derm-doc once that they can be frozen off with dry ice, believe it or not ... he used this treatment to get rid of a wart once and the surrounding spots disappeared as well. But, now what? They are back!
Anna Bucciarelli April 14, 2013 at 03:54 pm
Great job Vivian ... good luck from here on in. Makes me wish I still had a dog but for now I'mRead More content with the wildlife in my yard, enjoy watching their antics and feeding them and happy to leave them to nature, not to have another living thing to concentrate upon and take away from my busy and hectic life. I am not being selfish here, just rational ... there are just so many things and people that need my attention and I must be prudent with my time and energy. I do love dogs, be assured, and want a park for them and EVERYONE in Chelmsford!

Thank you, Anna!

Our leaves are starting to change up here. I noticed it a couple weeks ago but thought it was maybeRead More some trees dying. No, this morning it was in the low 40's. Farther north than me it got into the 30's. I'm not ready for the switch :( I want to try to come down for the halloween event with the boys. We'll see....

Hope you can make it-Howl'ween this year will be October 14-a Sunday. The day was changed toRead More accomodate the younger crowd who have athletic events on Saturdays, and were disappointed they could not show off their costumed pooches last year.
Vivian Merrill August 22, 2012 at 08:10 pm
Forgot to mention the location for howl'ween will still be at Parlee Farms Corn Maze at pine hillRead More and Galloway roads. 11-3.
Vivian Merrill April 19, 2012 at 07:59 pm
Thanks, Sue. My experience with Fishers usually involve my chickens, and it never ends well. TheRead More last time I was able to hear the little booger in the act, and I was able to frighten him off just by going outside with a flashlight and a broom to make some noise, and he never came back. Or he got taken out by an owl or another predator. Who knows?
Suzanne April 20, 2012 at 01:19 am
2 months ago, our daughter was leaving at dawn to get to campus early and a fisher ran across theRead More driveway in front of her car. We lost a cat 2 years ago to what we think was probably a fisher. I get so nervous when our 2 indoor cats go anyplace near the doors!
Vivian Merrill April 20, 2012 at 02:06 pm
Susanne, many people share your nervousness. All things considered, though, I suppose I'll takeRead More living with New England's Critters over pretty much any other place in the country. Florida can keep their crocs and alligators, Arizona can have it's scorpions, and Washington State can keep their grizzlies. As long as nobody dumps a boa or other non-native snake in the wild around here-we should be OK.

Hi Viv, very good suggestions. I once stumbled upon a black bear while in the field in theRead More Berkshires. I backed away quietly and he or she just kept on eating the berries they were so engrossed in. BTW we met the Halloween visitor last fall. He or she was very interested in our bird feeder and even left us a big "present." :-)
Vivian Merrill March 9, 2012 at 04:38 pm
Thanks, Cori-good thing you don't have a dog, mine would have flipped. A present-yay!!-let's pee onRead More it. It's mine! It's mine! It's mine! As an aside, ACO Erik also met a family last year whose rabbit hutch was torn apart by a bear. All he wanted was the food. The poor rabbit had a heart attack and was left on the ground. All the food was gone.
Tom Christiano March 1, 2012 at 02:05 pm
Thanks for all of that valuable information Vivian. I went to the discussion about chickens atRead More Agway last Saturday as I find this all very interesting. I was surprised to read that you go through 75 pounds of feed a week! At that rate, it looks like a very expensive proposition to keep chickens. I hope you are able to "re-coop" your costs somehow.
Vivian Merrill March 1, 2012 at 07:15 pm
Thanks, Tom. Although we get a lot of eggs, I'm not certified in any way by the Board of Health, soRead More I can't sell them. I end up giving a lot of them away.
Tom Christiano February 16, 2012 at 01:08 pm
Good one Vivian! I sure hope it works out if you ever get a small dog like this Pekingnese. As forRead More vacuum cleaners, I finally found one which works great (I have three cats to vacuum for) and that vacuum is a SHARK NAVIGATOR. I bought it on sale at Costco last year and it's holding up great!
Vivian Merrill February 16, 2012 at 04:13 pm
Thanks, Tom- The vacuum I'm trying to kill at this time is by Sears, and is very popular amongRead More cleaning services, according to the man behind the counter when I drop it off for its annual service. In four years I've burnt out a power head and now the hose is junk-but both are easy fixes. The Hoover I had previously did really well, until a small rock hiding under a radiator blew it up.

Thanks for posting this Vivian. Very helpful for everyone!
Vivian Merrill January 26, 2012 at 03:01 pm
Thanks! Someday I hope to create an abbreviated version of this to frame and hang near a dog park.
Kenneth Dews January 25, 2012 at 04:57 pm
Well Mr. Daniel Plourde Jr, I'm not at all cynical, (and even less sinicle). I do think thatRead More squirrels deserve more space than dogs in as much as squirrels were here before the dogs. In fact, my initial point was that neither have any right to degrade public property. I am all in favor of setting land aside for animals, the trouble is, once you allow dogs in, the area is unsuitable for any other animal - including humans. Perhaps you missed that point, and also the point that dog fees pay for someone to chase out of control dogs, and to occasionally scrape them up off the pavement. I don't live very close to Roberts field, however I have put in many hours of volunteer labor there so that it would be a better park for people. True, the park is not occupied 24/7. Are you then in favor of a nightime dog-park? How do you find the poop in the dark? or should we install lighting as well so the dogs can frolic and fight at 3 AM? The bottom line is that setting aside public property for an exclusive activity that is detrimental to the property is inappropriate. (Exclusive because it will be fenced in and will be unfit for other use and detrimental due to the pollution and danger to the public). If a group of citizens wish to engage in such an activity they should do it on private property. There is a model for this, almost every town has a "sports" club. An area of privately owned open space where citizens can go to kill things without endangering the general public.

Fortunately, Mr. Dews is in the minority, and he is aware of this. Stoddard Neck Dog Park inRead More Weymouth, Medway off-leash Park, Dufresne Park in Granby, Pilgrim Bark Park in Provincetown, Beecher St. Park in Jamaica Plain, Foxboro Dog Park, Leslie's Retreat in Salem, Sharon Dog Park and the Lowell Dog Park are just some of the parks built on public land in Massachusetts. Peter's Park in Boston abuts several baseball fields, and there are several pirivate parks around-Dog Paws Daycare in Hudson won an award as one of the ten best parks in Mass. I could go on. The fees collected from dog owners go to the General Fund. The ACO is paid as a non-union member of the police dept. Little League is an exclusive use-one can't use their fields for anything else. So are the girl's softball fields, and Sunny Meadow Farm for that matter. They all benefit the public, and so would a dog park. Your sentiment about the sports clubs and people kill things is off base as well-but you are entitled to express your opinion, fortunately the majority of people I know do not share it.
Odd Jobs and Such May 11, 2012 at 08:21 pm
As a dog owner I have been to many of the aforementioned dog parks and my dogs think they are great!Read More My gripe is with the people who enjoy the parks but do not see any reason to clean up after their dogs. Totally unacceptable. At Callahan State park there is more dog poo right next to the trash barrel and mutt mitt dispenser than there is anywhere else in the park. Very discouraging. A new product on the market addresses locations where there is no trash barrel. It is a clean and convenient way to tote that nasty bag until you can find an appropriate way to get rid of it. It has many features including hand sanitizer and clean bags. For those interested you can check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=3907054316599
