Dear Fitness Coach,
I love to bake, and I happen to be very good at it. Unfortunately for my husband, the outsize portions and extra helpings have caused him to gain weight, especially in his stomach, over the years. How can I help him lose some weight without giving up my passion to bake and his passion to eat it?
I am glad that you are taking the initiative to help your husband lose weight. Studies show that abdominal weight gain, especially in men, put them at higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and even certain types of cancer. You absolutely do not have to give up baking - just perhaps some of the ingredients you may use. The following is a list of ingredient substitutes that you can swap in to make the dish lower-calorie, with your husband probably not even noticing the taste difference. An important tip when reducing the fat in baked goods: Do not overmix. It will make the batter tough and rubbery. Also, do not overcook, as low-fat cakes and muffins tend to dry out quicker. Bon Appetit!
