Though Henry David Thoreau is considered by many to be a founder of environmentalism, some of the best environmental writings come from Ralph Waldo Emerson. One of my favorite quotes of his is this:
"He who knows the most, he who knows what sweets and virtues are in the ground, the water, the plants, the heavens, and how to come at these enchantments, is the rich and royal man."
As state senator, I will always work to protect those "enchantments." I've spent countless hours in Walden Woods in deep understanding of the sacred duty we have to protect the earth for us, and for future generations.
But today, due to waste, pollution, and unsustainable fossil fuel use, the future of our planet itself is at risk.
As state senator, I will support development of alternative, sustainable forms of energy, including but not limited to on-shore and off-shore wind energy, solar energy, and ocean wave energy, and support the development of clear and expedited permitting to fast track these developments.
I will support passage of the expanded bottle bill.
I will support stronger public transportation, oppose service cuts, and encourage the development of new housing and business development near existing public transportation lines and stations. An online sales tax, a gas tax that provides protections for low-income families, congestion pricing, and toll roads can all help raise the necessary revenue.
I will support energy efficiency, including supporting a pilot program to label buildings with energy efficiency ratings, and improved weatherization of existing buildings, with low-interest loans available to building owners who can repay the loans at the rate their buildings save on energy costs.
With Republicans in climate change denial, and corporate political spending on steroids to elect candidates who will gut the Environmental Protection Agency, it's more important than ever to have the strong leadership I will provide in the Massachusetts State Senate to protect the environment, and preserve our enchantments for generations to come.

Mara wrote, "I've spent countless hours in Walden Woods." And this campaign piece is the best you can do? You forgot to tell us about dental hygiene, elbows on the table at meal time, and Interupting others.
Tell us whether you believe there is any limit to other people's money.

She's a hopeless liberal do-gooder, unable to use a calculator Reverend.
In this country private enterprise once built railroads, trolly lines and bus companies, and ran them efficiently - at a PROFIT! Now Mz Dolan wants to pour more of our money down the government-union toilet called the MBTA.
She's got all the extra taxes already figured out. Her slogan ought to be 'Building Government and Enriching Unions – on YOUR Tax Dollar$'
And of course the ooey-gooey issue of climate change [it was 'Global Warming' just a few years ago until the fraud of Michael Mann was revealed] – designed to reassure her lemmings that she'll watch over Mother Earth.
She doesn't know – that 10,000 years ago there was a sheet of ice covering the Merrimack Valley – ONE MILE THICK. Clearly some global warming has worked to the advantage of us humans.
I wonder WHO was polluting the atmosphere with CO2 – 10,000 years ago?

I agree Iron Mike. We should only accept science that benefits our corporate sponsors.

Not clear on your meaning,...I have no 'corporate sponsors', just common sense!
Mz. Dolan is looking for a cushy state pension,...and she's knows how that game is played. Appeal to the MoonBats and the TaxoCrats, - and of course the EnviroCrats.

Naw, it is about paying attention to natural, as well as man-caused, climate change. It would also be a good idea to focus on the rest of the world. China, India and the rest of the 'developing world' burn so much carbon that conservation efforts here would have limited effect.

All the hand-wring over climate change / man-made global warming will be reduced to an after-thought the next time a major volcano erupts - such as Krakatoa in 1883, or Pinatubo in 1991, - or Yellowstone...

I agree. We should ignore the smoke stacks, just like we ignored the growing national debt, until it completely overwhelms us.

What smoke stacks? 60+ years of heavy-handed Democratic [enviro-nut] over-regulation has chased all the smoke stacks to China and India. Now we have ZERO control over them.
The word over-zealous comes quickly to mind. MassLiberals love to come out and protest the Cause du Jour – without EVER thinking through the consequences.
It was the same mentality that elected Obama - without EVER looking at his resume. They wanted to 'feel good' and 'make history'. They sure did! Historic unemployment, and a credit downgrade.
My point Cob, is that on almost ZERO notice, a massive volcano can make all your concerns about 'climate change' evaporate. Did you at least look up what the effects of Krakatoa were - and how long they lasted? [BTW - no cars back then.]

You are correct about the volcanoes. Yellowstone blows it's top every so often and when it does, instant climate change.
You are incorrect about the credit downgrade; that was a gift from the Republican party. I heard Paul Ryan say the same thing last night and the fact checkers took him apart for it.
You are right about moving our pollution over seas and losing control of the smoke stacks. Apparently, many of the latest Chinese coal power plants have the proper smoke stacks -- the problem is they don't turn them on because it's expensive.
You are wrong about blaming everything on Obama and liberals. The mess this country is in was a group effort!

Corn Cob - you will exhaust yourself on Iron Mike and the Reverend. They spend all their time bashing people and complaining about Obama and the liberals, with nothing constructive to offer. They believe that global warming/climate change is a hoax and doubt that Obama was born in the USA. They make Fox News look fair and balanced!

Alice,
Here is a constructive thought. Let us consider the election. On one hand we have a brilliant campaigner, with little to show in previous accomplishments, and lackluster performance in his current job. On the other hand we have a lackluster campaigner, with a strong entrepreneurial record, and demonstrated ability to run a complex organization.
Which would you rather have as President?

I am saddened and amazed at the number of TaxoCrats who continue to support Obama – even after he has proven unable to fix or improve anything – even his golf game.
I don't fathom their sense of personal connection to this lifetime fraud and professional narcissist.
The man took personal credit [ I – I ordered – I decided – I – I – I] for killing UBL – a mission he delayed and demurred over for 2 full years. Now he keeps spiking the football. Yet he has all but ignored the gathering threat of the Arab Spring and the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Iraq, where we bled so much and pulled out prematurely – is about to become an Iranian surrogate.
4 years after his grandiose promises – the 9/11 plotters have NOT been tried, are still in Gitmo, and many of the terrorists he's released have come back to kill more Americans.
Can somebody please explain why these TaxoCrats are acting like Obama's Klingons? Do Democrats have a secret rule that they must always vote for the worst candidate?

The expanded bottle bill is an extension on the tax revenue the state receives for bottles and cans that are not returned. If an extension is adopted to include water, juice and milk containers, what’s next? Deposits on lottery tickets, scratch tickets, gum wrappers? This has to be stopped now. The existing bottle bill is bad enough as it is. Has anyone calculated the amount of air pollution introduced by people returning bottles and cans? What about the trucks that ship all the returns to a facility that will burn fossil fuels to recycle the returns?
How much revenue does the state take in from the existing bottle bill and what happens to the money?

Alice,
It is clear that neither side will convince the other side. You are either for or against abortion. You are either for or against the instrusion of government into your private life. You either believe that the rich just got their money the easy way and that that every one else is being taken advantage of. Obama has never really worked and believes in a resdistribution of wealth. I believe that people should be given an opportunity, but not a hand-out when they chose to not work. The fact is we will not agree and we will not convince the other of the rightness of our positions. That is what elections are for.

How about a tax every time you press the 'Submit' button for a reply on the Patch? I figure we could see that in Obama's third term.

Everyone is complicating this and other issues. If the Speaker of the Massachusetts House wants it, it occurs. Otherwise it is tabled. This is what happens in a one party state and why, unfortunately, the primary on Thursday September 6th is the closest we have to a real election, Senator Brown, fortunately being an exception.

Maybe for some things. For climate change however, the problem is that there isn't a replacement for a coal power plant. It's like the common cold, there isn't a cure. Hydrogen is the closest solution but no one has figured out how to make hydrogen fuel from water without using lots of electricity or fossil fuels. The only solution is to improve our schools and to stop labeling smart kids nerds.
