State Senate candidate Mike Barrett's environmental activism has drawn the endorsement of a group of Bedford, Concord, Lexington, and Lincoln residents who lead local efforts to oppose expansion of Massport’s Hanscom civilian airport.
Group members include Lori Eggert and Ron Green of Bedford; Leslie Fisher, Michael Henchman and Sarah Lazarus of Concord; Kay Tiffany, Margaret Coppe, Stew Kennedy and Andy Friedlich of Lexington; and Jim Henderson and Jim Hutchinson of Lincoln.
Massport, the writers contend, has repeatedly tried to bring ticketed passenger service, cargo operations and expanded infrastructure into Hanscom, threatening the balance between commerce and the serenity of historic places. The group believes only strong community efforts can limit inappropriate expansion.
“Our State Senator represents us in meetings with government officials,” group members say in a statement, “and Mike Barrett’s the only candidate who really understands the issues around Massport’s Hanscom Field.”
Signers of the statement argue that Barrett’s expertise in environmental policy can aid the entire state.
"In his prior service he won awards for outstanding contributions to shaping environmental laws," signers write. "Mike authored two landmark laws, to reduce toxics in the land and water and to create a hazardous waste cleanup fund.”

This helps explain why Barrett is such a weak candidate. A stronger one would refuse this endorsement and recognize the hundreds of millions of dollars brought to the economy by Hanscom Field.

Perhaps you're confusing Hanscom AFB with the field. The former is a significant economic force in this area. The latter is a bunch of flying lawnmowers buzzing our tree tops. I know Mike, and he's a good guy.

Alan,
Several hundred million dollars worth of business jets use the civilian side of Hanscom Field every week... hardly 'flying lawnmowers'. They transport the 'movers and shakers' of Boston's western suburbs. You and Mike Barrett should pay more attention.

They may cost several hundred million dollars, but they hardly generate that much economic activity around here. Wichita maybe, but not the 3rd Middlesex. As for the flying lawnmowers, I see them over my house near every day, flying their lazy circles. I live in the neighborhood, Reverend, and I *am* paying attention.

Alan, you are still not paying attention. These business tools generate enormous economic gains for towns around Hanscom - directly and indirectly. Do you think we would have the surrounding industries without them?
Did you awaken one morning and ask, "How did that airport get there?"
