Tsongas Named As Ranking Member on Armed Services Oversight Subcommittee

Westford's member of Congress was appointed to the position on Monday.

Chelmsford's congresswoman, Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell), was named as the ranking Democratic member on the House Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations on Monday.

Tsongas hopes to use the leadership role to continue working on issues such as improving body armor for the troops and addressing sexual assault in the military.

"I am honored to have earned the respect of my colleagues over the past five years and look forward to using my leadership role to help keep our military the best equipped and best protected in the world," said Tsongas in a released statement. "This role provides me an opportunity to work across the aisle to ensure the policies and procedures put in place to support of our servicemembers are followed through fully and efficiently."

In addition to her role on the Armed Services Committee, Tsongas is also a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, where she serves a subcommittee that oversees national parks.

A sad day for our military and our country – this life-long anti-war / anti-military socialist can only see soldiers as 'victims'. She's all about light-weight armored vests and rapes in the military.

Don't get me wrong – rape is a serious crime and a problem. But decades ago wise military leaders warned against expanding the roles of women – warned that there would be unwanted consequences...

So Tsongas discovers that soldiers aren't cub scouts... And she has more victims to fuss over.

I so agree Mike. This woman, like the Clintons, Obamas, John Kerry, Pelosi, Fienstien, Reed, etc....they hate the Military. And, its a damn shame.

Iron Mike, you really need to crawl back into that hole from whence you came. "Decades ago....". Sorry gramps, times change. Women are even allowed to vote now! Did you know that??? Some are even doctors and lawyers!

A well deserved post for Democrat Congresswomen Tsongas. Hard work and dedication pay off . There are the doers and then there are the constant complainers for political advantage. Niki is a doer .
Good luck Niki in your new role.

Tyler,

I will ask until you answer, Tyler, is there any democrat that you do not support or have not supported and is there any republican that you do support. If the answer is no to both, the constant cheerleading for every democract means little to me. I prefer to think before I jump in and blindly support someone.

Ron: I vote straight Democrat all the time. Not interested in a conservative or libertarian ideology, and i do think. I'm a progressive ,liberal and you?In Ma I have plenty of liberals to pick from. i don't do Republicans. They are a dead party anyway, mostly regional in the racist and anti-government South. we are a left of center country now. I work for a living so you are not going to get instantaneous responses from me. I'm not interested in what it means to you. I know a lot of voters that pride themselves in being unenrolled and hence "independent". The only problem is that every election , they swing to the right.

Ron, couldn't the same be said about Iron Mike with regards to supporting republicans and opposing democrats? If you're going to start calling people out, at least be consistent.

Com'on Mark – you afraid to ask me directly? Yes, I have supported honorable and Constitutionally correct Democrats. Alas, there are just so few left...

Read my blog "Defending US Attorney Carmen Ortiz"....

Niki Tsongas on the other hand is a lifetime socialist,...and a very special kind of stupid!

Easy there "Iron Mike". If I cared what you thought, I'd ask you. I just kind of fine Ron's little obsession with one poster a bit odd.

As for being a "socialist". It's so cute how people like you love to throw that word out there, regardless of the veracity of the claim, simply because you disagree with a liberal agenda. Maybe when people give up the empty yet animated vitriol, we might actually be able to have a meaningful discourse about such topics. But that's not what you're interested in. You just want to continue to perpetuate your image as a cranky old man sitting on his front steps, stewing in his racism and mysogyny, while yelling at the neighborhood kids.

Mark I picked on Tyler because he can be counted upon to every time a Dem is mentioned to jump up and state that they are wonderful. I also think that anyone that tells me that a certainty party is dead shows that they have not studied history. If you feel the same way, I am not denying you the right to ask them same questions. Tyler, I do find it interesting that given many of the issues some democrats have had, you cannot state that you would not support or have not supported them. And before you attack, I am not saying that this is the exclusive province of dems. I prefer to examine each candidate and make a decison based upon their character and their policies. You have the right to vote the same party without fail as well. As far as working for a living, good for you, I think we all do that.

MarkG,
Why do I have to be consistent? I can chose to direct a question to whomever I wish. If you want to aek Iron Mike the question go ahead, or you could ask me. The fact is that Tyler has refused to answer for more than two days, why..?

The number one trait/sign of "people like you" is referring to a liberal as a socialist. But hinting that rape is the natural and expected outcome of allowing women in the military. Well, that might just make you the top dog of "people like you"....

Knowledge can be a positive force in your arguments Mark – rather than assumptions and feelings.

For instance – research the prevalence of rapes in our general population, vs the military, vs college campuses.

Research Niki's voting record and then carefully explain how much of it differs from that other socialist – Nancy Pelosi. You ~ just might ~ discover that San Francisco has 2 congressional votes – and you have none!

"rape is a serious crime and a problem. But decades ago wise military leaders warned against expanding the roles of women – warned that there would be unwanted consequences..." Translation, according to Iron Mike, these women should have expected to be raped. If you don't realize the ignorance in this statement, then frankly Iron Mike, you scare the heck out of me!

You can call the entire world socialists, and it won't change the fact that you've taken a shockingly offensive position on the rape of soldiers.

You clearly know nothing about our military, our history - or about warfare in general.

Your statements and rants are made from the perspective of a well-protected civilian who has never stood in Harm's Way.

There are times when I read or hear such uninformed drivel, - and think back to my friends who didn't make it – that I wonder if their sacrifice was worth it.

Socialism: an economic and political theory advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods. The military is the only thing in America that fits this description. We have a private sector in this country that owns and operates the modes of production. Banks are private, corporations are private , military-industrial complex is private, hospitals are non-profit private.
Use the terminology correctly , Mike. Social Security and Medicare 'socialism"? Want to advocate their immediate repeal then? How about the VA hospitals ? " socialism"?

Tyler, you should really pause before you hit the button – and read what you write.

Banks were bailed out by - - GOVERNMENT.

The military-industrial complex...the military half is GOVERNMENT.

MANY hospitals are city, county, state, and even federal.

Social Security and Medicare are forms of socialism [you get partial credit] – but social security was corrupted from it's original design – the money is / was supposed to be OUR money – half paid directly by us, - half by our employers. Jimmy Carter started making it a give-away lollypop tree.

VA Hospitals are our nations continued debt to those who served – and are NOT socialism you ungrateful [...deleted...]!

You ongoing campaign against military veterans – calling their EARNED pensions, medical care and survivor benefits 'socialism' qualifies you as a particular kind of ingrate.

There isn't a single thing you have in your life – not the ground you stand on, not the air you breathe, not your freedom to be obnoxious – that wasn't paid for by the suffering, sacrifice and blood of our military.

Have you ever visited a military cemetary - or a VA hospital?

You drift, Mike. Government involvement and government ownership are two separate matters.Your mental awareness needs to distinguish. Even those entities that you cite as socialistic models. viz., military cemetaries, state hospitals, do you advocate then that they be dismantled , eliminated because they are socialist? A bailout is not socialism, any more than an oil subsidy.. Please don't let your ideology get in the way of your distorted thought process.
Again, since you suggest these institutions are socialist , do you advocate that they be privatized? I'll answer for you. They can't because they do not make a profit. Stretch your logic. Dismantle all that is ' government", including the military and make it private? Your confusion would be cures , if you kept the terminology correct which you seem unable to do. I say all this in the interest of constructive criticism, knowing that corrective action will never be taken . debates with far right extremists are dead end streets.

Mike, you basically state that it should be expected that enlisted women be raped, and when I call you on it, your response is that I know nothing about our military or warfare. Would you care to elaborate? What about our military and warfare do I NOT know that makes your opinion reasonable?

You've got this small minded approach where as soon as anyone calls you on your ignorant, small minded hate speech, you hide behind some incongruous argument about our military. So, basically what you're saying is that your fellow servicemen didn't die so that I can express my opinion, but only so you can promote your racism, mysogyny and ignorance. Wow.... God Bless America?
