Wakefield Ends Chelmsford's Hockey Season After Shootout
The Wakefield Warriors will advance and play Burlington after their win against Chelmsford, 2-1.
The Wakefield Warriors last night ended the Chelmsford High School boys ice hockey season after Alec Brown scored the game-winning goal on Lions goaltender Derek Noble in a shootout. The final score was 2-1.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead at the 5:42 mark of the first peiod when David DeDonato tucked a shot behind Wakefield goalie Joe Cerulo, assisted by Jon Fairbanks. It stayed that way throughout the second period as both teams played close checking defense that opened few good scoring opportunities. And when opportunities beckoned, Noble and Cerulo held their opponents at bay.
With a large contingent of rabid student fans for both sides rocking the arena, the teams battled through a scoreless second period. Chelmsford still led by a goal until the 5:52 mark of the third, when Warrior Dan Cardillo took a pass from Tyeler MacDonald and from the left circle beat Noble to tie the game.
In the overtime period, Wakefield survived back-to-back penalties with just over six minutes left.
It was on to the shootout, where Wakefield came out on top for the game-winning point.
