Selectmen Will Hear About "Solarize Massachusetts" Program Tonight, What's Your Take?

The topic will be an agenda item at tonight's Selectmen's meeting, but in the meantime, we want your thoughts.

Tonight, the Board of Selectmen will hear more information about the town potentially becoming a part of the Solarize Massachusetts program.

Sponsored by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, the Solarize Massachusetts program allows residents and organizations to install solar panels to generate electricity at reduced prices.

Chelmsford’s proposal team has developed a 5-question online survey to help inform the Town's application to the program, which is due on 2/20/13. This online survey expires at midnight on 2/18/13.

What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.

I currently have a solar hot water heater. When I got it serviced last year I asked about the solar panels. I was cautioned that photovoltaic panels on the roof can get hot (versus hot water has glycol circulating) so there can be more maintenance. Ask questions about it - including whether they will remove the panels if your roof needs repair, who maintains the panels and who pays for it. Also keep in mind that you'd be contributing to the grid - if you don't have power, your panels don't help you. If you want a solar backup, I was told a ground mounted system would be better with batteries less maintenance but the batteries make it more costly.

As long as it is done with private money I am fine with it.
