School Committee Enters Into Agreement for Shared Food Services Director with Billerica

The committee members signed the agreement last night.

The School Committee last night approved a contract to share the services of Billerica Food Service Director April Laskey.

With the approval, hoping to “achieve economies” the director will be responsible for budget, acquisition, personnel, menu planning, and a variety of other administrative tasks. Chelmsford Public Schools will supply $45,000 annually to the Billerica Public Schools on a three year contract.

Against the measure was committee member Al Thomas, who believed that the town would be “best served” with a full-time director.

“I think the agreement is well drafted, that’s not an issue,” he said, “I think if we were doing this, as I see it, in the best possible way, there would be a greater commitment than this calls for.”

School Committee Chairwoman Janet Askenburg admitted that the contract was a bit of a “leap of faith," and that the committee needed to trust Laskey’s experience.

“Given the timeframe, and basically the community desperately calling for changes as soon as possible, I think this is the best situation,” she said.
