One of the things so great about them is that they are seasonal so we appreciate them all the more, hearing them only at this time of year. All of you contributors picked the BEST songs, an I wish you all a very happy, jolly and holy season. Happy Everything!

I agree: Bruce Springsteen's rendition of Santa Claus is coming to Town! RIP Clarence, AND the most beautiful christmas song is What Child is This? BUT the MOST FUN is "I ain't gettin' nothin' for Christmas, mama and Daddy are mad, I ain't gettin' nothin' for christmas cuz I ain't been nothin but bad!" I don't know the title...

I like "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." If you have never watched the scene in "Meet Me In St. Louis" where Judy Garland sings it as her character Esther tries to console her five-year old sister Tootie, then you are missing out on one of the classic moments in the history of silver screen.

Some feel that the song is sad and depressing; however, I do not think that this is the main message of the song. The song was about thirty years ahead of its time -- it certainly captures a sense of gritty postmodern ennui, but it does so with an optimism worthy of Rorty. This is not escapist optimism, but rather the kind that Bruce Springsteen wrote about with the lyrics, "Still at the end of every hard earned day, people find some reason to believe."

It's an optimism expressed as an act of self dignity. Perseverance is extolled as a virtue. To the content, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is a warmly received holiday anthem; to the despondent, the song seems to be saying, "Yeah, things are tough, but be happy in spite of it all."

So well said, Ron. I voted earlier for a "light" song by two of my favorite performers but this is one of the songs which has a deeper meaning for me. "Through the years we shall all be together, if the Fates allow..." is just one of the lines which become more meaningful and poignant with the passage of time. And the song does not demand us to celebrate loudly or wildly but rather expresses the sentiment that a "merry little" Christmas is quite enough. Thank you for adding your commentary!
