New Pope Francis I Elected: Catholics in Chelmsford React
The white smoke appeared on Wednesday afternoon, signalling that the conclave had chosen Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to be the new head of the Catholic Church.
The wait is over, and the Catholic Church has its first South American pope.
According to WHDH and new agencies across the world, Argentine cardinal Jorge Bergoglio has been elected, and will take the name Francis I.
Today, we want your take. We've left messages with Father Peter at St. Catherine's in Westford and Father Donohoe at St. Mary's here in Chelmsford.
Father Paul at St. John the Evangelist in North Chelmsford said the announcement was "surprising, exciting and a blessing in the life and mission of the church," but said he had not heard any immediate reaction from his parishioners on Wednesday afternoon.
What do you think about the papal decision? Are you disappointed an American pope wasn't chosen? Do you think this decision will change the church or reinforce traditional values? And how will ongoing scandals impacting the church affect the new pope's term in the Vatican?
Tell us in the comments.
More information on the pope is available from the Holy See Press Office.

I am not Catholic, but I was hoping for the African Cardinal, as his region is one of the few seeing an increase in membership of the Church; tapping into whatever is helping that trend seems like a good strategic idea.

Actually, Andrew, He won't be "known" as Francis I until such time that there is a Francis II. It's simply Pope Francis....
