National Grid Tells Chelmsford to Expect "Multi-Day Event"

In a conference call this morning, Chelmsford town manager Paul Cohen says the main focus of the utility will be clearing roads and restoring power to key areas.

After conferring with National Grid local officials this morning, Chelmsford town manager Paul Cohen reports that the utility is bracing for a "multi-day event" here in town, with approximately 2,500 homes still without power.

Cohen says that by the end of the day, all debris and fallen power lineswill be removed from roads, allowing Halloween to be celebrated on schedule.

This will likely be followed by critical community buildings such as schools and public safety centers that may not have power in and near Chelmsford will be first in line, hopefully allowing Chelmsford students to return to school on Wednesday.

After power is restored to these areas, he indicated that areas with large sections of homes without power will be targeted next until all homes have their power restored.

We will provide updates on estimated times of power restoration as they become available.

@Paul Cohen, I just spoke to a National Grid customer service representative and they are blaming the town of Chelmsford for the extended outage. According to National Grid, it is up to the town to identify trees at risk and notify National Grid - not the power company.

As this is the third multi-day power outage in three years that I've had to endure, sign me.....

Another week with no school and no Halloween? Why don't other towns have these issues? Please don't say it's every town, because that is untrue.

I agree. Why is Chelmsford always the first to have no power and the last to get it? Something somwhere is not working or communicating properly. I thought we would have figured this out by now. Last year five days wo power, what this year? Very dissappointed that the town cant get this right.

My doorbell doesn't work without the power ---- does that mean I don't have to participate in Halloween : )

I also wonder why Chelmsford is having yet another multiday outage. Storms are not new here. Is the grid too old? Is it not maintained? I'm fed up also.

Do the schools have power?? For my sanity, and perhaps many other Chelmsford parents, I am sincerely hoping this is the case so the schools can re-open in the morning. We cannot afford a repeat of 2011. School is closed next Tuesday, on Veterans Day and of course Thanksgiving and the following day. And then it's Christmas vacation. And we wonder why our kids might not be learning enough during the year...hmmm???

After the last outage I bought a Generac Generator it is attached to my gas line. If you live in Chelmsford you need a generator as neither the National Grid or the BOS
or the town manager who doesn't live in Chelmsford gives a care! I live off of Boston Rd and this is the 3rd time in 3 years with multi multi days without electricity...Not any more thanks to my generator!

I'd just like NG to actually update their map beyond 'assessing conditions'

I am a bit confused. Is it more important to clear the debris in order for the children to trick or treat or remove debris and move on to restoring power?

We've been a storm away from a multi-day power outage since the last storm. Chelmsford (town officials and residents) need to get serious about removing trees that overhang the wires. Most of these trees are not beautiful -- they're scruffy or trimmed beyond recognition - and need to be removed. Every storm it's the same discussion -- let's get serious about the trees.

Just got the call that they aren't sure there will be school tomorrow. Supposedly some trees and/or power lines are still down. Ridiculous. If only 2500 homes are without power how many trees could still be blocking roads?? And some schools have power already. There must be a way to get the kids back to school.

billerica had a 2 hour delay today the kennedy elementary school had no power. i believe they had a generator but they said they would figure out something for lunch for the kids. if they can still have school and figure that out why cant chelmsford? ok it may not be safe to have the kids on the bus stops so instead why not have a call saying school is on but no busses? that would make more sence. parents can drop the kids off or find rides if they have to work. at this rate they will be in school till july!

I have never had a multiple day outage in Chelmsford in the decade I've lived here. Last Halloween we lost it for less than 12 hours. I'm sure it depends what street you live on but of the four towns I've lived in in this state Chelmsford is by far the best about getting power back. My husbands parents are regularly without power for days after a storm in their town.

Power on Boston Rd and Parker Rd......Why did they forget Brian Rd which is between Boston and Parker.....happens every power outage. I have lived in Chelmsford for 45 years and it has been bad for power outages on my road for the last 3 years. Why is that?

We live on Cathy Road and lose power constantly! The house diagonally across from me has power - how is that? One half of Thomas is out the other half on, it's crazy. I think the town needs to meet with NG and try to get a handle on these constant problems.
Frustrating!
