Is Home Depot Coming to Chelmsford Center?

We tackle the question for You Ask, Patch Answers.

Welcome to You Ask, Patch Answers, a column where you send us questions about anything at all going on in town and we get them answered. Got a question? Send it to krista@patch.com.

Question: I heard Home Depot is coming to the center of town, where Stop and Shop used to be. Is that true?

Answer: We pointed this question to Town Manager Paul Cohen, who said  he has not heard about such a proposal from Stop & Shop officials or from anyone else. "The site does not fit the profile for a Home Depot due to its distance from a major highway," he added.

I agree the main issue of this site would be the distance from a highway so that it would attract enough business to support itself; these days there are so many home improvement stores I doubt traffic would be much of an issue; it would have been if we were talking 10 years ago. There's not much business at Lowes in Lowell as it is.

When is this inanity going to cease. Home Depot will come to Stop & Shop Plaza when semi-trailer rigs can fly. Yikes.

Way to get my hopes up! =D
Speaking of this topic, though, what's the latest verified info on possible uses for this eyesore?

DW Highway in Nashua is not "major", yet Home Depot is there...not to mention tucked behind other businesses.

There was a proposal to have a Home Depot in Billerica Center at the old Billerica Mall but the Billerica residents voiced their opposition to it. That site is not near a highway either but they would have built on there if they were allowed to.

The issue is that it is considered Class C space and the only interest has been the Dollar Store or Ocean State Job Lots. Stop N Shop is looking at redevelopment with some residential units. Dollar store? Housing?

Has anyone noticed the size of the construction project next to the current CVS store? Looks out of character for this part of town. Also, has the handicap access ramp at St. Mary been approved by the town? I know there was some discussion months ago about how it is detracting from the historic character of the church. St. Mary claimed that it didn't have the money to repair a handicap access elevator, but what's interesting is that, at the same time, they're in the process of raising millions to add additional community center/office space (mostly office space) next to the church.

I live very close by to that area, and I love that's been dubbed the "eye sore." :) As a new resident, I agree, it can only be called that! But the rest of the area is so charming and ...wonderful, that it's really a shame for such a "hunk of space" sitting there. So I hope that something less "eyesore-ish" will be coming very soon.

As long as Stop and Shop owns the property my guess they pay the taxes on it as well. The world may turn brown with acrid rays of red before another business (no threat to Stop and Shop) is given an option to buy it. This will be leaving the lot and building to the rumor mills of time and your guess is as good as mine if the land is ever released.

:)!! You're probably right, but that is SAD! Unless someone buys Stop and Shop out, but I'm probably dreaming now. As it is, even if Stop and Shop reopened their doors again, that would be better than what is there now.

We unfortunately have had eyesores in the past. Remember how long we had the vacant reminants of the Chelmsford cinema. Not the best first look for newcomers to Chelmsford.

It's all good! The rest of the city is so pretty that it leads to more "head scratching" than anything else, actually. It gives one every reason to believe that whatever does go there will be good, it is just a matter of patience.

Any ideas of what's going in there yet? I heard someone bought the whole lot.

I read that, too. It sounds like a local developer (real estate) from New England called Winstanley bought it from Stop and Shop - THANK GOD!! They redeveloped other "eyesores" in Rhode Island and Connecticut, so hopefully, we are on our way (God willing!) to a having a new plaza.
