Freeman Lake Closed Due to Bacteria Counts

Bacteria counts in the lake are too high.

The town has announced that the ceach at Freeman Lake is closed until further notice due to high bacteria counts.

Heart Pond, however, is still open.

The Board of Health said it tests the water in both lakes on a weekly basis. The high tempuratures are a contributing factor to the increase in bacteria levels, the board said.

Health Director Richard Day said the town's bacteria count is at about 400, which is above healthy levels. Day said that at a count of about 2,000, people would start noticing mild sickness symptoms from ingesting the water. Day said that while kids should be monitored, if they swam in the lake today, they'll probably be fine.
