Decision on The Beech Tree Coming Soon, What's Your Take?

A decision will be made on March 11, but in the meantime, the town is still looking for input.

The iconic beech tree isn't coming back to the Town Common, but the town is still looking for suggestions on what to do with its remains.

We asked you all this awhile back, and we're asking again today because the town is once again asking as well.

Here are a few suggestions discussed at the TREE meeting last week.

  • Bench
  • Planter
  • Monument to the tree
  • Wooden nickels
  • Posters
  • Rustic furniture
  • Wooden cookies
  • Walking sticks
  • bowls
  • tables

A decision will be made on March 11.

How about a carving? Minuteman? Chelmsford Lion?

A bench would be nice, and useful also.

I believe the stump should be made into a bench for many to enjoy. If the inside of the tree is decayed, it could be hollowed out into a planter. The stump as it now stands is an eyesore and detracts from our town monument. Any type of a carved statue etc. would take away from the three significant icons that exist on the common.

A monument to the tree, a bench would be nice. Most of all I'd like to see a new beech tree planted by school children just as the original was.

I would like to see a bench such as the one at the Senior Center. It would certainly be a part of Chelmsford history. A. Crose

I think a bench should be a given but there is more wood to do more with and I'd like to see all of it used. A planter in the cavity of the stump is a nice idea, but eventually that will rot too.
